Do a Mitzvah with previous season’s children’s clothing in 3 easy steps

The Pick-Up Children’s Gemach was started out of need for stylish, good-condition children’s clothing, for families of Lakewood Bnei Torah who would appreciate used clothing if it was stylish and current. All the work is done by volunteers so we don’t have to charge the recipients for used clothing.

1) Put your current, lightly used children’s clothing in a garbage bag, sealed tightly (to protect from rain).

2) Label it “Gmach.”

3) Text 848-525-6961 after you put it on your porch (or other specified location), with your address.

It will be picked up within the next 24-48 hours by one of our volunteers. Please keep it on your porch until it is picked up.

There is no charge for pick-ups

We take:

Excellent condition, stylish children’s clothing

We may possibly take some men’s white wrinkle free/iron free shirts in popular sizes if in excellent condition and men’s new black shoes

Anything that isn’t suitable for our Gmach, but is still usable and current, we give to Serendipity/Deja New.

  1. Much Kudos to you for this endeavor. If you didn’t pay so much attention to “STYLISH” and not be so picky I think more people would be motivated to give you their STYLISH clothes.

  2. Where does it say that even children’s clothing has to be Stylish. If its in good condition is it not good enough. when our children were young my sister in law took used clothing from her friends after she used them she gave them to us and after we used them if they were still in decent condition we gave them to our neighbors, We B H made a living so did my sister in law, It does not pay to buy FENCY SHMENCY clothing for young children they outgrow them very fast, I might be old but we still should not be so upset with children’s clothing or with grown ups clothing, Its the mentch inside the clothing that matters, Eizehu Ashir Hasameach beichelko. #3 is 200 % correct, Abi gesunt.

  3. I dunno. So this select group of Bnei Torah need stylish clothing, and the leftovers will go to Serendipity? Does Serendipity know about this arrangement? Shouldn’t the Bnei Torah lead the way in lowering the gashmiyus level in Lakewood?

Or maybe i misunderstood this post.

  4. This is a small gmach servicing a handful of families of Bnei Torah. It is run by volunteers to eliminate all costs so we can pass decent, batampte clothing on to families who need it in a bakovodik way. Therefore we require stylish clothing. It is not to chas v’ shalom outdo neighbors. It is in order that people don’t assume that we take just about anything… Keep in mind, when you mention USED CLOTHING, some people mistakenly think you take anything and everything including things from 5 years ago. Since we’re fully by volunteer, we stress that we want stylish clothing so we don’t get bombarded and overwhelmed with everything people are looking to get rid of. We want clothing that fits in…not sub-standard (and not to set the trend either) so our families who care to dress in dignity can.

Stressing “stylish” also helps define what we take. Used means it was already worn once. If we stress “stylish” then we get clothing that is generally higher quality such as European brands which will hold up better second time around. Target, Carters, Canadian brands just don’t hold up as well.

We specify where the clothing that doesn’t suit our families goes since people were wondering if we make a profit, if it takes away from DJN, etc.We only give DJN USABLE, CURRENT things which is what they specify they want, pre-sorted without the junk they complain that sometimes people give them (and costs them money to haul away). Since we’re a small gmach, servicing a handful of families, there are some things that we wind up with and can’t use but are still of value to a wider crowd. Take the example of a designer men’s bathing suit. We got one and since the yungerleit aren’t interested in such a thing, we passed it on to DJN since it was something of value.
DJN is a wonderful gmach servicing a wide range of people and we hope that they will continue to receive stylish up to date clothing as well, as they specify on their ads.
