Did you Know? Juneteenth, the New Federal Holiday, will be Celebrated this Weekend

Last year, Biden signed a bill making June 19th, known as “Juneteenth,” a federal holiday, marking the end of legal enslavement of black people in the United States.

The bill, which passed overwhelmingly in both the House of Representatives and Senate, marks the day in 1865 when a Union soldier told enslaved blacks in Texas that they had been ordered freed by President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier.

The legislation gained popularity after the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in the aftermath of the resulting nationwide protests.

Federal employees began observing Juneteenth last year, with federal offices closed.

This year, Juneteenth falls on Sunday, which will give employees Friday off as well.

Juneteenth is now the eleventh recognized federal holiday, joining the likes of Memorial Day, Independence Day, New Year’s, and Labor Day.

  1. I feel that the celebration of emancipation should be working out of choice, not enslavement. Just taking another day off is a sign of contentment with a lack of productivity!Avda bhefkeira nicha lei…

  2. Civics lesson. Federal holidays that aren’t observed on a Monday unless they fall on it: Veterans day is Nov. 11th, Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November, Christmas is December 25th, New Years Day is January 1st, Independence Day is July 4th and Juneteenth is June 19th. When a holiday falls on a weekend the federal recognized date moves (Saturday moves to Friday, Sunday moves to Monday). This is directly from the Office of Personnel Management website, the federal government site for clarification.

  3. After MLK national holiday this is the 2nd new African American holiday in a short time; hard inexpensive African American Labor helped civilize and build America; but what about national Jewish Holidays ; if not for Jewish doctors and scientists we would be dead before age 40; if not for Jewish lawyers we would all get robbed; if not for Jewish engineers our buildings and structures will collapse, we’re overfed with high quality foods thanks to Jewish scientists etc etc.

  4. For only the second time ever, New Jersey will celebrate Juneteenth as a state holiday on Friday.

But the federal holiday for Juneteenth — which celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. — will be Monday.

That means state courts and offices, including MVC offices sites, will be closed Friday. And while it will be normal business for state government Monday, the federal holiday means federal courts, mail delivery, and other federal services will pause.

  5. @Mutty there are 8 million Jews in the US vs 40 million Black Americans. That’s why we don’t have a federal Holiday. Public schools in communities with large Jewish populations get many yomim tovim off, and I’ve never heard of a secular employer denying a day off for a day when working is assur. As minorities we have a duty to come together. Racism and Anti Semitism are the same at their core!!!
