PHOTOS & VIDEO: The Lakewood Piners Vs Neptune Central Jersey Basketball Final yesterday was honored by the presence of the Deputy Mayor Albert Akerman. Akerman and Simcha Greenwald attended the game in support of the district’s after-school program, under the auspices of Tom Ross Jr.
Ross Jr’s after-school program services approximately 160 children, and has about 20 volunteer coaches.
The Lakewood Youth Basketball League was established 1993 by Ross and The Lakewood Township Committee to help combat the growing gang presence in Lakewood. The league consisted of volunteer parents and coaches and through their diligent efforts, the Lakewood Youth Basketball League developed into one the premiere youth leagues in the Ocean and Monmouth County area. In 2002, Omega 13 inc., a youth mentoring organization founded by Dr. J Michael Rush, co-sponsored the league in order to bring an educational component and mentor the youth who participated in the league.
Greenwald introduced Ross to Deputy Mayor Akerman, the Township liaison to the center, who has taken on a leadership roll in helping to support programs for everyone in the Lakewood Community.
In January, Akerman visited the Spruce Street school, where he gota first-hand look and experience of the program.
The Piners lost to Neptune 74-61, but that didn’t take away from the team’s exceptional season.
“I just want to congratulate Coach Randy Holmes and the Lakewood basketball team on a great season”, Tom Ross Jr. said. “This was suppose to be a rebuilding year and they surpassed expectations by making it to the Group III Central Jersey Finals. They have made the town of Lakewood proud.” TLS.

were those the off duty police officers hired by Stillwell for school security.
No those are off duty police officers paid by Lakewood schools as security. Kinda like a road job. The security at the HS will be retired police officers.
The deputy mayor was at a High School game, as noted Lakewood Vs Neptune. Tom’s group is not a varsity team but an after school club team. I am sure in the future many of those students will be playing for the varsity teams.
