Dashcam Video: Not Knowing Pedestrian Laws Can End in Tragedy

This reader-submitted dashcam video shows the dangers of not being aware of pedestrian laws.

Watch as a car passes other vehicles waiting for pedestrians to cross, not realizing the cars were stopped for a reason.

The Lakewood Police Department has recently also cracked down on pedestrian safety.

  1. Just saying, the cars that were stopped were waiting to make a left turn as there is a turning lane, so with no pedestrians in his view there is no reason to think that they stopped for something.
However, if the pedestrian warning sign was flashing he should have slowed down regardless of not seeing a person in the crosswalk.

  2. I live in Lavallette and this happens all day everyday all summer. People are crossing at crosswalk and one car stops and car in next lane keeps going. Very dangerous this summer. Everyone be careful if you come here.

  3. Well. If u remember from drivers Ed, you need to come to a complete stop b4 the crosswalk. That would negate any issues. That driver was simply going too fast to stop b4 the crosswalk. Slammed to a stop in the crosswalk and should be reprimanded

    • There’s no stop sign there no need to stop by any crosswalk unless someone is in the crosswalk. Being that the ppl didn’t enter the crosswalk what did he do wrong? Also don’t be nice and stop to let people cross if you don’t know for sure that ever one around you knows what you are doing and why, otherwise you just put those people crossing at a great risk follow rules don’t make your own.

  4. Happened to while pushing a non verbal autistic young man in his wheelchair while crossing Clifton n 1st street. Car stopped to let me cross n car behind him went around him on the left. Thankfully I was paying attention and saw so I stopped in front of already stopped vehicle. The car realized I was crossing and came to a stop. I could go on n on about crossing safely but my biggest gripe is when people park in driveways and block the sidewalk. I don’t think people realize just how dangerous it is to have to push a wheelchair out into the steer.

  5. Lavallette is by the ocean, just north of Ortley Beach. I see from people riding bikes and walking. Just warning to be careful. It is very quiet during the winter.
