DASHCAM VIDEO: Captured by one our dashcam videographers, this video shows what many drivers around town experience on a daily basis, and what often results in a motor vehicle accident.The video, captured while driving Eastbound on Central Avenue, shows not only a driver looking for a shortcut down the shoulder, but also shows a second vehicle passing the dashcam driver by driving behind the first driver, on the shoulder as well.

FYI – IT IS ILEGAL to drive or pass on the shoulder.. The shoulder is for disabled vehicles, emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians (when no sidewalk is available). Driving on the shoulder is a tickeable offence with FOUR points on your license.
That means that if the car in front of you is waiting to turn left, you MAY NOT drive around him on the shoulder, regardless of how long you have to wait. This video demonstrates the worst use of shoulder, but passing casually is just as ilegal. STAY OFF the shoulder.

there is a reason why driving on the shoulder of a road is illegal. Unfortunately, because it may not make sense to some people, they seem to feel no need to obey such laws. Some drivers are completely oblivious to the dangers of such practices. Why not take down the license plate #’s and issue tickets? And for all of you who complain about Lakewood police handing out too many tickets already, obey the rules of the road then you won’t have to worry about getting any. Better yet, study NJ drivers manual , quit complaining & learn to drive safely.

to # 8 please explain to me the logic behind what is dangerous by driving on the shoulder inorder to pass a car turning left?? Dont explain to me what the law is- explain the logic. Laws in this country are created over emotion- menaing if someone R;L got killed bec he wasnt wearing a seatbelt ok now we gonna make seatbelt law and that will solve the problem!! NO these laws are all made bec someone in the legistation who knows a relative who died in a car accident and the medical examiner decided it was bec he wasnt wearing a seatbelt so now we get over our mourning by making laws and feel we are saving other lives. this is all bolony!!!!!!!!!!! I have yet to see someone get pulled over for passing on central avenue!! If one does it will be a first and definitly worth all those times that one uses the shoulder in the heavey morning rush hour!!
Put it this way, Chaim (who I assume is of Bike-For-Chai critique infamy), were you to pass on the shoulder and then -oops!- didn’t see that pedestrian who is allowed to be there, would you attend the funeral or not?

when I was taught how to drive i was taught to be a defensive driver, with that said I look before passing a car on the right shoulder. I am not saying that a accident cant cv happenbut those chance are just as equal as driving down the regular lane by me.

There are people walking, bicylists, disabled vehicles. Just do a google search for “killed on shoulder” and you will see why its “logical” to obey the laws and keep off the shoulder. You are not learning a blatt of gemorah, there i no logic here. DRIVING IS A PRIVLAGE not a right. If you dont agree with the laws and feel they do not apply to you, GET OFF the road. You are a clear example of why howell is now selling those bumper stickers.
Not sure if everyone remembers trooper Castellano. He was killed by someone who was driving on the shoulder. Logic or not IT’S ILLEGAL!! People wake up!!

Of course you can’t drive on the sidewalk to get around traffic, that would be silly, you would brake a tire jumping the curb.
Just wait… Soon central will have one lane in each direction where the shoulder is now, and a big middle section for turning cars.That’s going to be even more exciting!
