DASHCAM VIDEO: Emergency Responder: If you See Flashing Lights, Pull Over

bus dashcamAn emergency first responder in Lakewood captured this video on his dashcam on the way to an emergency on December 29, and wants it publicized to educate drivers.

In the clip, the emergency vehicle’s lights can be seen flashing, and the air horn blaring, yet a bus driver was either oblivious or just didn’t seem to care for the first several seconds.

  1. I was driving down cross and a bus turned right in front of me from prospect and of course stopped at the train tracks right after.
Due to the fact that I had to shortstop and swerve into the next lane a box from the back of my car came flying to the front and destroyed a big portion of my dash.
It’s unbelievable that the bus drivers now are so arrogant.
They are always seen flying through the tiny lakewood streets and arrogantly and unnecessarily blocking traffic.
I’ve seen many times that they use the lights to make a turn because they don’t want to wait, after you stop they go in front of you.
They think that because they are bigger then you they are better then you and always have the right of way.
    It’s very disturbing!
I think the driving laws should be enforced 10x for them as they are driving our kids, they are endangering others by driving the way they do.

  2. I totally agree 10000000000% They drive like crazy. I personally experienced many times that they just drove right out of street while I was coming at full speed. Of course when we need to turn into a street they will never let us go, only if you’re another bus will they block the street to let that other bus turn. Someone has to stand up and give it to these crazy drivers….

  3. I’m sorry but I disagree with the previous posters. The vast majority of school busses that I see are driven courteously. It is a major challenge to negotiate our congested streets safely and I think we all do things occasionally that are a little risky or inconsiderate. After waiting to turn for 4 minutes you might just zip out in front of an oncoming car and hope for the best. There are bad apples in every bunch, but I just don’t get the constant school bus driver bashing that goes on here. My children ride busses and I am insanely safety conscious. I just don’t see the crazy stuff people describe on here. I don’t think I could drive 80 rowdy kids, under pressure to be on time, on the crowded Lakewood streets, without losing my mind. I am very thankful to those who do, especially the ones who are so nice.

  4. Careless driving aside…. That is a whole article on it’s own.

Likewise, the chutzpah and pure disrespect of not pulling over for an emergency vehicle is beyond self centered. On countless occasions, I had family members of sick patients jumping out of the passengar seat of the ambulance outraged on why the vehicle in front is not yielding to the ambulance.

Respectfully, a few admitted to me that this is an area that they can work on themselves. As one woman told me, ‘It is different when it is your mother in the back of the ambulance.’

The next time an emergency vehicle approaches pull over to the right, and say a quick prayer and hope that the emergency responder is not heading to your home.

  5. Hey Annoyed, maybe if you weren’t driving like a nut you wouldn’t have to use so much bakes. How fast were you going to be able to launch a box from the back of your car to the front? Lastly, if this is not your first time driving in Lakewood then you would know how many school buses there are in town.

  6. Considering all the congestion, kids, tight roads etc I think the bus drivers do pretty good. Maybe some of you complainers should ride along for a few days for a different POV.

  7. Stop BUILDING thats the problem if the buses were to wait at the stop signs for a clear opening they’ll be at the stop signs all day its to crowded Lkwd streets arent built for this and the more u build the worst its gonna get.

  8. Majority of the hundreds of bus drivers are safe and courteous, there are a few rotten apples in every bunch. As a whole I don’t see bus drivers worse than other drivers, maybe even better percentage wise. Yes, I am one of those that stops at stop signs before continuing.
