PHOTO: If you’ve driven on Route 9 over the last few days, you may have been pleasantly surprised to the smoothness and the conveniences of the new turning lanes. This evening, and for the next couple of nights, motorists are asked to use caution as the state workers complete the repaving process.
The project included resurfacing from Kennedy Boulevard until Main Street.
So now we have 2 lanes merging past the Lakewood Courtyard going on rt 9 s, instead of the backup from 4th st. It doesn’t make any sense not to have 2 lanes crossing over the lake until Central Ave. It was a little congested by the lake this week, hope they correct it by the time they are done. Also motorists beware of the NEW turning signal on Central, it’s different now.
smoothness??? Its a disaster!! there is no way to get from forest ave to clifton. Every single street is blocked!
do you think maybe they could put a left turn signal from kennedy ,to route 9 north…….pleassssssssssssssssssse. it would go nice with the new pavement.
Nice job, now we have fresh pavement to dig up when we build the new condos.
whats with the raised manholes? they are a disaster!!
#5 they are probably still going to put a finish layer of blacktop on. The manholes are set at the final grade.
what changed on the turning signal on central?
I really appreciate the work it’s beautiful but I live in the area and the lanes are really narrow I’ve seen a few trucks almost swerve into a lot of people. I called and they said too late???
The objective of a reporter is to report not to make desicions on weather “you may have been pleasantly surprised” or not which to me it feels to narrow and people will slow down under the speed limit of 50mph but 2 lanes by the courtyard won’t help as there is not enough room by central for 2 lanes anyway so there will always be backup!
To #7 the left turn arrow turns green while the light to go straight stays red.
not just Kennedy but County Line & rt ( could use left turn signal.
Also, 9th st could use a letft turn lane & signal too. 2nd & 4th too.
With turning lanes now in place there is nothing that will keep the speed down. Before there were cars making left hand turns all over and the speed of the other cars were slowed. The way we drive in Lakewood, mark my words, serious accident on the 9 will skyrocket.
I like the new changes- my drives down rt 9 are so much faster now that there are turning lanes and I’m not stuck behind someone making a left turn at every intersection…
There is ging to be serious accidents at Rte.88 and Rte.9 south. I was almost pushed into the cement wall at the Lake yesterday. People trying to get to the right turn at central Ave. early.Guess this is one of those things, looks good on paper but not in rreal world.
fantastic now continue the 2 lanes going south past the lake and make a long right turning lane for central.
and then continue the center turning lanes through rout 70
adjusting the traffic lights along route 9 accordingly would put a nice finishing touch to this great improvement.
I’m surprised to see all the complaints and no thanks.
Thanks are due to the public officials for coordinating the initial road work for a time when many residents were out of town for Pesach. I could just imagine the disaster such work would have caused on a regular weekday with people rushing all over and the roads backed up.
In addition, the turning lanes should help traffic flow smoother. No more having to stop at each corner for left turning cars.
As someone who lives near these turning lanes, I think they will make a big difference to the congestion on Route 9. Also everyone should realize the work at night often wakes us and our kids up, so I hope our patience is appreciated by all who benefit from the work.
A public service announcement to ALL lakewood drivers:
When driving on Route 9 South approaching Central Avenue, with intentions of turning right onto central: IT IS Illegal and against the law, with 2 points on your license to drive on the shoulder. You MUST wait until the shoulder turns into the turning lane and then switch lanes. I cannot count how many times I have my signal on, enter the turning lane at its starting point, to nearly get slammed by some car speeding into that lane from the shoulder.

To quote from the NJ drivers Manual::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::. Never pass on the right shoulder of
the road. This is against the law. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-85):::::::::::
Since we are on this topic, this also applies when someone in front of you is waiting to turn left. You CANNOT pass him on the right shoulder, regardless of how long you need to wait. The shoulder is used by pedestrians, emergency vehicles and disabled vehicles. SLOW down, be patient and WAIT…. DO NOT drive on the shoulder for any reason, understood?
Rt.9 is wonderful now but how about fixing the road at the corner of Rt.9 and Prospect St. or are we too far away vfrom the main area????
