Crews Dismantle Decade-old Fire Watch Tower in Lakewood [VIDEO]

In July, TLS reported that New Jersey Forest Fire Service’s Lookout Tower on Massachusetts Avenue in Lakewood has been permanently closed.

Today, crews are dismantling the tower.

As earlier reported, the Tower was originally built in 1944 by five employees of JCP&L for just $360 (see below). In 1974, it was moved 300 feet because of a property dispute.

Currently, the tower is recorded at 136 feet tall and was crucial in identifying fires in Lakewood and surrounding areas for close to 80 years. In fact, it was a vital tool during the Airport Road Wildfire in March of 2021.

A new fire tower is expected to be built in Jackson Township soon, possibly within the next year.
