PHOTO: Tent City is just a few weeks away from a complete closure, Deputy Mayor Albert Akerman confirms to TLS.
“The Lakewood Police Department is in the process of marking the tents of individuals who have already been placed,” the Deputy Mayor, who together with Committeeman Lichtenstein has been at the forefront of the Tent City resolving process, says. Those tents are being torn down immediately.
“As the township works to finalize with the remaining residents, our Department of Public Works will be tearing down the tents of those who no longer reside in tent city,” Akerman says.
The remaining residents on the official census list and are numbered at about twenty, Akerman says. Housing for those individuals is currently being sought, and once they are placed, the homeless encampment will officially be closed.
This final process is expected to take several weeks, the Deputy Mayor said.

How long until the townhouses come up ?
Can I get preconstruction price now for the up and coming tent city Estates
I must be honest. I do appreciate the hard work that’s gone into getting this shut down. That said, had our township and elected officials been viligant when this started up years ago, we would have never gotten to the point where the town had to spend huge sums in getting it shut down. As soon as therer were 10 people there they should have shut it down. Instead, it was allowed to grow and our elected offcials acted only after neighbors repeatedly complained and protested.
As a neighbor this is not happening fast enough. Over the past few weeks there have been many new residents spotted. We want a date given for finality!
It would be a sad statement to tear these down to only quickly turn around and build houses.
thank u Deputy Mayor Albert Akerman!!!!!!!!!!! gr8 job “vcol me sheoskim…………”
how do we know people wont go back there? are they gonna have a guard there? or all trees taken down?
Its a shame this whole thing became Lakewood tax payers problem….Maybe the county should of stepped up a little sooner before it got out of hand.
What’s the problem if townhouses go up there? Do you think that you will not be able to breath normally if we take down a few trees?
sorry but they cant build houses there cause the land is a cesspool & is not good enough to build homes there. i.e. that is why Lakewood township couldn’t sell it to a contractor all these years.
#9 asked the question – “What’s the problem if townhouses go up there? Do you think that you will not be able to breath normally if we take down a few trees?” Trees convert carbon dioxide (from humans exhaling) into oxygen (what humans breath in to live). I was taught that in grade school. And as far as a “few trees” it is common practice in Lakewood to clear cut any property that is being built upon.
farewell, go old neighbors!
It’s a good thing that they are finding theses people to places to live. But it terrible that they are building more places and tearing down more trees! How many homes you need to build in this small town that is overwhelming with traffic. So glad that i am leaving this town cause it’s getting worser and not better!..
Kimberly h? Worser? That was the education you got with all our money? Please make sure the door doesn’t hit you on the way out good riddance
There are still people from tent city going by the liquor store and bothering people for money for booze and now someone is living in the Johnny on the spot near the baseball field across the street! What’s up with that (moderated)?
