Could speed limits be lowered around Lakewood?

With all the talk recently about speed limits, a new discussion has come up about lowering limits around Lakewood in an effort to reduce the accident rate.

(See GSP speed limit petition.)

Many feel reducing the speed limits around town would help improve our roads. Currently, police handle approximately 25 accidents per day, according to an earlier report on TLS.

But, even if a study was conducted and proved that our roads would be safer with lower speed limits, it would be no easy task.

With regards to Township streets, “it could be looked at,” says Mayor Ray Coles. However, being that many roads in town with higher limits belog to either the County of the State, it could be a battle – as they would need to approve them.

“I know years ago Charlie Cunliffe worked on getting Chestnut Street speed limit lowered,” says Coles, but says he’s not even sure if it came to fruition.

The Mayor added that lowering a speed limit for example from 50 to 35 MPH would require heavier enforcement from police to ensure drivers obey the lower limit.

Coles welcomed input from residents, and said he would pass on suggestions to the police department’s Traffic Safety division to review specific areas to determine the feasibility.

In a poll on TLS last year, approximately 73% of voters said they were not in favor of lowering the speed limit around Lakewood.

  1. I’m coming from Brooklyn (just moved here) let me tell you that this is a stupid decision and I’ll explain.
When the speed limits was lowered on Ocean parkway the same thing happened. It’s not working cars are very very slow. In slow motion. Here in lakewood I saw 100’s I’d drivers that drive while talking on their silly phones!!! When we brooklyn ppl got a $125.00 fine +points! And here you have the chutzpah to ask to lower the speed limit???!!!! Lower your phone, put that deadly weapon away while driving. You lakewooders are causing the problems with in. STOP TALKING ON THE PHONE WHILE DRIVING!!! And then we will start to have safe roads. Thank you.

  2. Lowering the speed limit is never going to help unless there’s a police force that enforces the law. How about speed cameras?, I’m not sure if it’s legal in the state of New Jersey. Recently in New York they put it up all over the place and it reduced the speed limit tremendously. It’s very annoying driving in New York now but it’s very helpful

  3. So make a pole again & you can see how many people want or don’t want it. I DONT want it changed & btw which Stree in Lakewood is 50mph??

  4. No! Please! We’ll never get anywhere if the speed limits are lowered! Just keep your eyes on the road and drive defensively and carefully.

  5. The majority of accidents that happen in Lakewood is because of distracted driving which in most cases happens when the driver is TALKING/TEXTING on the phone. In The past year i had 2 separate incidents where i was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on RT 9 barley moving & All of a Sudden BAM, the car behind me banged into me. in both cases the drivers were using they’re Phones. So NO lowering the speed limit Will NOT lower The Accident Rate, IF EVERYONE PUTS DOWN THEY’RE PHONES that will lower the accident rate

  6. Slower travel speeds means more time on the road, which translates into more traffic. Better yet, install more lights and crosswalks. That would create safer ways to cross the street. Also, less building will amount to less traffic which will translate into less stressed drivers running late and safer patient driving.

  7. Really?!? Speed limit? Show me one accident that happened in this town over the passed year that was caused by a driver going over the speed limit with no other cause I.e. Cellphone or drunk driving. Stop with the unnecessary “trying to look like we’re trying to accomplish something waste of time” antics.

  8. Lowering the speed limit will not help anything. Start enforcing the law with those talking on their cell phones while they drive. You’ll see a major decrease in the number of accidents.

Women may be great at multi tasking in the kitchen, but when it comes to operating a vehicle, they aren’t very good at it. They get distracted very easily, and have trouble focusing on the road.

    • What?!!! “Woman aren’t very good at it”.. Is this related to being a Woman?

BTW I know many men that are also ‘great at multi-tasking in the kitchen’, including my husband..and I have no issues driving and don’t get distracted doing it. And I drive a tractor-trailor (that’s the big trucks with 18 wheels that goes very fast on the highway)

  9. It’s the phones
    It’s the phones
    It’s the phones

I get cut off or a driver rolls through a stop sign or holds up trafffic at a busy light (left from central to Rt 9) because they are texting or talking on the phone

Enforce the rules of the road already in place…

  10. Nook way this will never work as its not speed causing the accidents

Make a poll of list of reasons so many accidents happening from
    1)texting and driving
    2)distracted stressed out drivers
    3)traffic

Many other reasons and see which reason comes up with the highest in the vote

  11. Speed is not a factor to the many daily traffic incidents in this town, Yes many accidents are caused by texting and driving or just being on a cellphone, I see this daily. I live in the yeshiva neighborhood, daily cars are parked illegally, way too close to the corner making it extremely difficult to make a turn off my block. Besides for illegal it is SAKANOS NEFASHAS!!!!
Please encourage the Police Department to take action into this as they don’t seem to care at the moment.

  12. i agree with this, speed kills that is a fact just like drunk driving and other distractions kill. what we need is to copy what NYC did and lower the speed limit, put up cameras and put in traffic calming measures like barriers in places where people speed. even 1 life lost is 1 too many.
