Could Clifton Avenue in Downtown Lakewood become a one-way?

That was one of the suggestions offered during the Downtown Subcommittee meeting tonight at Town Hall.

Several other suggestions were offered, in an effort to alleviate traffic in the downtown area.

Other ideas included involving the state to help figure out a solution to the bottlenecked intersection of Route 88 and Clifton Avenue, reinforcing meter maids for on-street parking and more.

In addition, the Committee spoke about the possibility of offering tax abatements and/or incentives for the beautification and re-facing of downtown buildings in an effort to make the downtown more attractive.

“We are looking to copy the ideas of other successful cities,” an official told TLS.

  1. Sounds like they r trying to copy 13th Avenue in Boro Park, bklyn which we r not interested in Clifton Avenue becoming another “13th Avenue” with an even more amount of bumper to bumper traffic.

  2. If you are going to copy other towns make sure you copy the successful towns. The ones that have good public transportation and infrastructure.

  3. Copy Boro Park?! We’ve been doing that for years. Just as Boro Park was transformed from a pretty neighborhood to an ugly crowded one because of unplanned, irresponsible growth, Lakewood is on the way to doing the same. Please stop! As #3 said, copy areas with successful growth, not ugly, crowded places like Boro Park which have tons of traffic,

  4. Sounds like a good plan to cause a disaster. None of the Avenues should be one way. Some of the number street would be of benefit if they are one way. Clifton to be one way? The number streets are all difficult to navigate. If you had to avoid Clifton when getting from one side of town to the other, it would make many times more traffic. And Clifton is plenty wide. There are so many narrow streets that should be one way.
