Copper Continues To Be An Item Of Interest To Thieves

Detective Steve Wexler tlsThere has been several burglaries over the weekend, mostly in vacant and unoccupied homes, Detective Steve Wexler tells TLS. The burglars, says Wexler, are cashing in on the unsecured homes by ripping out copper piping from homes under construction, or vacant homes and selling the scrap metals at a hefty price.

“Lock your homes and turn on light”, Wexler said.

Several months ago, there were multiple burglaries involving copper, with at least two of those burglaries occurring at the Verizon facility on James Street.

Some metals, such as copper, could fetch over $3 a pound Wexler says. TLS-CCP.

  1. it should be against the law to buy these metals, as it has opened a whole new field of thievery – People steal pipes out of regular homes – they steal gas tanks, it’s insane

  2. As the bad economy continues, more people turn in desperation to crime. Do not be easy prey. Be careful about preserving your personal belongings and keeping yourself and your family out of harms way.

Know where you are and who is near to you. If a person looks out of place, they probably are. Report unexplained and unattended vehicles in the area to LPD.

Criminals generally take the path of least resistance when planning a burglary or robbery.

  3. I don’t no wat tooke the guys up heah in jeysey so long to figa this out. We crackheads in philley and tren’on have been doin this stuff fo yeas. A house fulla coppa gets us about a hafadays wortha drugs. U no it costs the homeowner about 5 grand to replace it but it gets us about 100 bucks ya no so aint it worth it?

  4. Number 5 are you nuts?? the facts are this, when you go to triad in metal you could have a hundred pounds of fresh copper pipe and they have no problem with that . they should call the police on that guy and have him prove where he got the copper from. no one pays ten bucks for a piece of pipe to trade it in for 50 cents its obviously stolen.

And they don’t just go after copper. where i live anything that’s metal if its not cemented to the floor it will disappear in a few days i had someone steal pieces of my fence!
