Congressman Smith: Feds need to determine if antisemitism was a motive in Dion Marsh violence spree in Lakewood and Jackson

In a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) asked FBI Director Christopher Wray to investigate whether antisemitism was a motive in the recent Dion Marsh violence spree. Below are excerpts of Smith’s remarks at today’s press conference in Lakewood:

“Special thanks to law enforcement for acting decisively and professionally in arresting Dion Marsh and charging him with multiple crimes allegedly committed in Lakewood and Jackson on Friday including three counts of attempted murder, carjacking, weapons possession, and three counts of bias intimidation—the latter raising serious concern that antisemitism may have been a motive.

I respectfully ask the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI to determine whether any federal laws were broken including hate crimes acts as found in 18 U.S. Code § 249.

Above all, we pray that the victims recover after this hideous assault.

As co-chair of the House Bipartisan Task force for Combating Antisemitism, I am deeply concerned that this pernicious hate—often resulting in violence—is escalating.

Silence is not an option.

According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Jews are “consistently the most targeted religious community in the U.S. and antisemitic incidents are being reported at record levels.”

The most recently available FBI hate crimes statistics shows that in 2020—despite being approximately only 2.4 percent of the U.S. adult population—55 percent of all religiously motivated hate crimes were against Jews.”

  1. what is to be gained by trying to figure out the purpose of dion marsh’s behavior. is the result worse if this lunatic attempted murder because the victim was jewish or because he just felt like stabbing someone. did he steal a car because he “needed” that particular model” of car as opposed to just for the heck of it. the world has lost its moral compass and the oomos ha’olam are looking for a reason to justify crooked behavior rather than trying to fix things. this is what leads to including ridiculous things in school curriculum, to denying government’s responsibility to protect is citizens…i could go on and on. the people who pull mezuzos off doors are not doing so for any gain;they are doing so because they can have fun and get away with it. until we go back to holding men and women (whatever those are), teenagers, privileged whites, even more privileged blacks whose behavior seems always to be justified, nothing will change

  2. This mammal had the car from about 1:30 PM till about 9 PM and the only people that got attacked or ran over were Jewish. If this is not a hate crime, then what is?

  3. Lakewood resident, you are not showing yourself as an enlightened individual at all. Motive makes a big difference. Please read up and get educated on what a hate crime is and the purpose to charge a crime as such. Just a little example (I don’t want your head to explode) imagine someone punches someone, now imagine someone punches someone because he’s a Jew. Ding ding ding.

  4. ADL,
Yes we do! B”H that’s how America works.
Investigations are conducted and people are charged based on facts, not “I know he did it.”
Imagine if that’s how it always worked in history?
Imagine a Jew accused of a Blood libel.
There would have to be proof beyond a reasonable doubt (which there would be none) and the Jew would be able to mount a proper defense. Oh how different things would’ve turned out.

  5. Why doesn’t the ADL tell us where most of the Jew hatred in recent years is coming from?
The ADL has been covering up for leftwing Jew hatred for years all in support of the democratic party which supports Jew haters as long as they are minorities or if white as long as they are anti Israel.
The ADL instead attacks Republicans for making arguably stupid holocaust comparisons while being silent when Democrats make even worse holocaust comparisons or actual anti semitic comments.
The ADL has become more leftwing since Obama sycophant Greenblatt took over, now they just shill for the democratic party.

  6. With the majority of the population in Lkwd being Jewish, an investigation of motive is necessary. Any random violence on citizens is likely to victimize Jews, the motivation is the key to determining if these actions were a hate crime.
