NEW STATS: Concealed Carry Requests in New Jersey Reached A New Record in January; Toms River Saw The Second-Most Applications Granted

In Lakewood, 525 new carry applications were approved over the last two years, compared to just six approved application in the three years prior to the Bruen decision.

A record amount of New Jersey residents seeking a concealed carry permit in the state reached a new high in January, as the state continues to deal with heightened interest following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision, which made it easier to secure those permits, according to updated figures released by the Attorney General’s Office.

A total of 4,282 applications for carry permits were processed in January. Prior to the 2022 court decision, the highest monthly total was just over 100.

Broken down by municipality, Newark, the state’s most populous city, saw the most applications approved, with 1,163.

They were closely followed by Toms River, which had 1,149 of its applications granted.

Lakewood, the state’s fourth most populous municipality, has had 525 new applications approved over the last two years.

Those 525 approved applications compares to just six approved application in the three years prior to the Bruen decision.

As earlier reported by TLS, in the months following the October 7th attack in Israel, the Lakewood Police Department has seen an extreme surge in gun permit and CCW applications, including over 700 applications in one month alone – a new record.

In the months following the Supreme Court decision, Governor Murphy signed a wide-ranging gun control bill package, which has since been struck down in part, and is continuing to make its way through the legal system.

Interestingly, despite predictions from Democratic politicians that the Supreme Court decision would lead to more gun deaths, Governor Murphy recently announced that in 2024, the state recorded the lowest annual number of shooting victims – including the first time under 1,000 victims were shot – since comprehensive tracking began in 2009.

Last year was the first full year since the state began granting the gun permits.

Despite the SCOTUS decision in NY v. Bruen, Gov. Murphy, AG Platkin, and the entire Democrat cabal continue to do everything possible to undermine Bruen and gut NJ citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights.

There was a gaping hole in Bruen, in the form of a cutout for “sensitive places”, for which concealed carry would still be prohibited. The Dems solution? Declare virtually EVERYWHERE in NJ a “sensitive place”! The liberal 3rd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has upheld NJ’s restrictions, which remain in effect pending another appeal to SCOTUS.

So, for the time being, a NJ concealed carry permit is essentially useless. The permit fees and costs for mandatory training are into the hundreds of dollars. Personally, I wouldn’t waste my money until NJ’s restrictions are struck down as unconstitutional.

There is only one gun law in the United States and it is written in plain English for all to understand: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”
