The results from this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign in Lakewood, are in. Over the duration of the nearly 2-week seatbelt campaign, the Lakewood Police Department has issued 219 citations, Lakewood Police Captain Gregory Meyer tells TLS.
From the 219 citations issued, 174 were for the lack of wearing a seatbelt, and 45 citations were for other infractions. There was also an arrest made for CDS, as a result of the campaign.
The campaign is held annually as part of a National campaign to curb motor vehicle accident deaths resulting from not wearing a seatbelt.
Click It or Ticket campaigns and similar efforts have increased safety belt use in cities, states and even in an entire region of the country. In New Jersey, 425 police agencies participated in the May 2012 Click It or Ticket Enforcement Mobilization. As a result of the enforcement, police issued 29,307 seat belt citations, 4,951 speeding tickets, and made 861 drunk driving arrests.
Also as a result, New Jersey’s seat belt usage rate currently stands at 88.29%, 3% higher that the nationwide usage rate. While the current seat belt usage rate is 6% lower than the usage rate measured in 2011, a new set of guidelines determined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2012 changed the methodology of determining seat belt usage rates, which may have contributed to the reduction of the current usage rate. Why stop the campaign? Ticket everyday for seat belts, failure to stop/yield, speeding, crossing double lines, illegal parking, texting and everything that is illegal. It’s the only way to make the roads safe. I am pretty sure once I get a speeding ticket, I will slow down for a while.
is a seat belt ticket a point violation?
The value of safety is immeasurable, and a safer NJ is wonderful. The 200 citations are unfortunate. why are we celebrating this? a better headline would be “Click it or ticket campaign results in 88% seatbelt usage” or something. Money is tight and tickets are not joyous, even when deserved.
I was not stopped during this campaign, so this opinion is not from bitterness. I know that all the law nuts are going to get on here and say that all who don’t wear a seatbelt deserve the death penalty and are lucky to get off with a ticket, but really guys, lets cool it.
I think the campaign should continue for a few more weeks. Stop signs should be added to it.
I agree with local. Keep the campaign going all year round.
the money is not available to keep the campaign going
Next, double the fines for texting, my husband is a policeman and this is next folks. Lakewood will make a fortune…The police dept, not the town
Dave… I am not a “law nut”. I am not a cop or a family member. I am a normal guy who accepts blame when doing wrong ( or at least when i am caught). I am also not stupid enough to drive without a seatbelt or let my children drive without one.
I don’t expect a death penalty for no seat belt, but those who don’t use them are flirting with death. And I agree, it would be nice when the campaign catches nobody because everyone uses their heads and buckles up.
They should be more focused on talking on the phone while driving and especially texting. This causes accidents
Why not just have cops looking around and keeping driving safe in general( I.e. their job)? I see busses with kids turning after their turn signal stops, in front of oncoming traffic. When’s the special campaign for basic safety?
