Christie Administration May Not Apply For $268M U.S. Education Aid

boe new buildingThe Christie administration may not apply for $268 million in federal education aid up for a vote in Washington Tuesday, the governor’s spokesman said. Some estimates show the aid could save thousands of teaching positions at a time when state budget cuts are squeezing New Jersey school districts. A survey released today said 80 percent of New Jersey districts will likely have fewer teachers returning in September.

The administration is concerned about what kind of “strings” might be attached to the federal money, part of a $26 billion package to be considered by the House of Representatives, said Michael Drewniak, spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie, said today.

“It would be prudent in not committing entirely to the idea of taking this money unless we know … what the impact is and the potential unintended consequences,” Drewniak said. Read more in Star Ledger.

  1. Good job, Christie! Keep it up!!

There is no such thing as “free” money from the federal government. It always comes with new mandates, strings attached, rules and regulations. The more money we take from the federal government, the more we give up our liberties to the federal government.

The people are fed up with the spending. Don’t forget to vote in November!

  2. he’s not taking the money so that he can destroy NJ public schools which as a whole were among the highest ranked in the nation, this fact made him look foolish when he tried to push vouchers and support for private education over public, so now with the cuts and not taking federal money he will destroy our excellent public school system and create a need were one did not exist for his vouchers

  3. Hey 3 – If we want funds for a better Public School System – dump the redundancy and hundreds of administrators and vice principals. The money is there no matter what the NJEA- says.

  4. Keep it up Chris! I am one of a million voters who put their children in public schools and I can promise he does NOT have my vote for reelection.
