Chometz Burning Sites Around Town

bmg_chometz_burning(TLS photo of Biur Chometz at BMG) Below is a list of the Chometz Burning locations around town. DFM William Gee asked TLS to stress to the community to no plastic items, large cardboard boxes and glass containers be placed in the dumpsters. All of these items fill the dumpsters up quickly. “We are asking  people not to bring  plastic and glass containers for the fires because the contents when warmed will expand and explode causing the heated contents to explode, sending the heated debris into the participants or children causing them to be burned or injured”. “If that occurs the fire marshal’s at the site may shut it down” he said. “In the last year, several bonfires in other areas of New Jersey have caused injury to the participants, so we are asking everyone to please follow the rules to prevent anyone from injury”.  (For further reference, this article has been added to our Pesach Corner as well).

The locations are:

1. BMG Parking lot  –  7th and Private Way
2.  BMG – Little League Field – 10th and Clifton
3. Cong. Zichron Yaakov  175 Sunset
4.  Chateau Grand Parking lot –  978 River Ave. (if approved by property owner)

  1. Since the mitzva (shiur) of Biur chometz is until the Chametz actually turns to coal/dust.. What guarantee do we have that this will indeed happen, they dont let you get anywhere near the fire. I would like to know if it is ok/legal to make my own fire on my property? and can I make one on a sidewalk?
if anyone can help me with some more info i would appreciate it.

  2. #3 IF YOU APPLY FOR A PERMIT, PASS THE INSPECTION AND HAVE AN ADULT WITH A WATER SOURCE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE YOU MAY BE PERMITTED TO HAVE THE FIRE. THE REASON EVERYONE IS KEPT A MINIMUM OF 5 FEET AWAY FROM THE FIRE IS FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION, THE DUMPSTERS GET EXTREMLY HOT, AND IN SOME CASES CAUSE RADIANT BURNS, OR HOT ASHES POSSIBLY FALLING ON A PERSON WHICH COULD CAUSE INJURY.

#4 CARDBOARD IS IN MOST CASES GLUED TOGETHER CAUSING NOXIOUS FUMES WHEN BURNED, JUST AS PLASTICS, AND PRESSURE TREATED WOOD, CAUSING IRRATITATION OF THE LUNGS AND EYES, AND POSSIBLY WORSE. CARDBOARD ALSO TAKES UP ALOT OF ROOM IN THE DUMPSTER, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO FIT THE ITEMS THAT HAVE TO BE BURNED.TROOPERS, I DONT THINK SO, JUST PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KEEP YOU AS SAFE AS YOU CAN BE, SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS.

  3. Hey twozeroonezero, CHILL OUT! Another thing I need to know is what is the penalty if I don’t get a permit. For religous reasons I can’t trust the Goverment to burn my chametz, but I can’t be bothered to get a permit. How much is it if I get caught? Thanx

  4. TYRONE, I’D ASSUME IF YOU WERE CAUGHT WITH OUT A PROPER PERMIT YOU COULD BE CHARGED WITH A LESSER DEGREE ARSON CRIME, AND WOULD LIKELY BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF THE FIRE CAUSED ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR, OR SOMEONE ELSES PROPERTY, CHARGED FOR ALL SUPPRESSION COSTS, AND CHARGED IF AN INJURY OCCURED. LIABILITY IS EVERYTHING IN THIS DAY AND AGE. JUST A SUGGESTION, GET A PERMIT OR RISK IT, I’D ABIDE BY THE LAW AND GET THE PERMIT IF IT WERE ME. ILL BE GOING TO ONE OF THE LARGE FIRES STATED ABOVE, GOOD LUCK.

  5. TYRONE YEARS BACK I DIDN’T GET A PERMIT AND A CHILD GOT SLIGHTLY BURNED AT MY HOUSE. NOT ONLY DID I GET SUED BUT I HAD A $5000. PENALTY ISSUED TO ME. SO DON’T BE A TOUGH GUY, GET THE PAPERWORK, CAUSE I KNOW THE BOYS WILL BE OUT IN FULL FORCE>

  6. Tyrone – suggest you check out N.J.S.A. Title13,Chapter 9 13:9-14.10 to start with before you put a match to any thing. $5000 fine to start—
and we will be out watching
Have a very safe holiday – bring you Chometz to a official burning location – no permit =$$$$.$$ fine

  7. Can I make a large chometz BBQ??? Ha! no fine for a BBQ is there.. So what if I like my chometz “well done”! Any way thanx for your info.

  8. Plastic and cardboard boxes are to be put in for recycling. Be safe and have concern for the need to recycle for the betterment of your children’s future quality of life.

  9. I make bon fires in my back yard all summer. The fire department came down one motzei shabbos and let it continue since they said as long as you do it in a pit above the ground it is legal.
