Children Playing on Partially Frozen Lake Sent Away by Police

PARENTS BEWARE: Children playing on the partially frozen Lake Carasaljo this afternoon, were sent off by police, an official told TLS. Police were alerted of the potentially dangerous activity by a passerby.

Parents should take note that despite it appearing frozen, the lake can actually have only a very thin layer of ice at the surface, goving it a frozen appearance and giving children a false sense of security.

Falling through the ice into the frigid water temperatures can prove fatal to young children.

  1. This article could have had a VERY different headline:

“Children playing on ice plummet into water, still missing”

    Please parents, watch your children!!

  2. dear local american residents: You are not used to freezing temperatures, you have no idea abt real ice safety…just because it has been below freezing for several days does NOT meant the lake is safe enough to walk on….if you look on the other side of the central bridge, you will see that some of the lake is no longer frozen even! Please don’t be stupid, don’t let your kids do life threatening things….. Your Canadian NeighboUr

  4. hard to believe any parent would take a chance of letting their children on the ice ,is it worth the tragedy that could haunt you for the rest of your life???

  5. Actually I walked onto the lake yesterday with my son and fell thru the ice. Luckily it was not very deep in that spot so I was able to pull myself out but when I saw those boys on the lake today I got pretty nervous!

  6. to anonymous. people’s brains being small? really? the fact is that people make mistakes and that’s how they learn from them. maybe there should just be more signs around the lake being more specific about not going on the ice. it’s a simple safety issue that more people need to be aware about. thank goodness those kids are okay.

  7. I live right by the lake, and there is a very noticeable small creek or tributary of the Metedeconk River flowing through at all times. Even when the lake appears frozen there is a wide flowing creek that is very deep, moving through the whole lake. I know people who tried to walk across on a very icey day and have fallen in. Hypothermia from the freezing water, as well as being caught underneath and drowning are the risks and outcomes. Stay out of the lake!

  8. runs though the lake that feeds it and eventually runs to the dam at Lake Manetta. With the lake drained like it is now (does anyone know why) the lake doesn’t freeze thick enough in that area due to the moving water. There is no water in the safety pond. Years ago the ice was thick enough to drive cars on and they used tractors to plow snow off an area for ice skaters. They didn’t drain the lake either.

  9. number 12 they are not draining it for no reason. they have to drain it because people will try to walk across it before it is safe and will fall through. because of the stupidity of some we all must suffer. welcome to lakewood

  10. I walked across the whole lake without hearing one crack like I was gonna fall in and there’s people going ice fishing in the middle of the lake where there’s about 2 feet of ice so if the middle of the lake has 2 feet of ice then I suppose it’ll b fine to walk on it

  11. It’s going to be in the 60 degree range by Wednesday. It’s just not safe. A few days of freezing cold temps does not make it safe, especially with a milder stretch of days coming. The NJ weekly fishing reports I follow have been consistently saying through this whole period that the ice in NJ is not safe. If it’s not safe for seasoned ice fishermen it’s not safe for kids. People will ignore warnings and come out unscathed, but it doesn’t make the ice safe, it makes them lucky…and stupid. A few weeks ago, 2 teenage boys were killed, farther north in the state…in a consistently colder area. Another indication is that some of the warm weather fish are still in the area and being caught because we have had a relatively mild winter on the whole, despite this recent record-breaking cold snap. Nature provides us with warnings, if we pay attention. As to ice, what looks like 6 inches could only be 2 inches thick, ice can fool a person…especially a child too busy playing to really evaluate the danger. It’s just not worth it!
