Child Locked In Vehicle Today; Use Extra Caution In Extreme Weather

child in carAfter Chaveirim was urgently called today to release a young child from a locked vehicle, TLS felt compelled to remind our readers of the dangers of such a situation. Although not always preventable, please use extra caution when doing errands or carpool etc. Always look behind you before exiting your vehicle. With temperatures nearing 100 degrees, a vehicle left in such weather can reach fatal temperatures in minutes.

On Monday, at about 2:00, on my way to pick up my children, I stopped at CVS. When I came out, I noticed a child (perhaps a baby also – I couldn’t tell if their was an infant under the blanket in the carseat) in the car next to mine. She was dripping sweat and crying. The car was off, the windows were closed, and the temperature was over 90. I asked the few women outside if the car was their’s. I was about to go inside the store when the mother (a Hispanic woman) came out with a bottle of milk…

After a second look at the article, how can any one say this is “not always preventable”? It is always absolutely preventable. You don’t ever leave your children in a vehicle period. It is as simple as that. There is no excuse for ever leaving a child in a vehicle, ever.

i think they are referring to the possiblity that a child was mistakenly locked in the car. this happened to me once, I was discombobulated and locked the door with the keys in the ignition. so I was locked out with the kids in the car. NO I did not leave them, I was fortunate that I was near a mechanic and he very kindly opened the locks for me.
but mistakes CAN happen.

Did Chavereim notify Hatzolah while they were on the way to the car ? That should be their standard protocol as it is Pikuach Nefesh Gamur

how is it not preventable to leave a child in the car…Children should be the upmost priority, followed by whatever erands are being run! Children are human beings! I don’t care if I’m running into a building for mere moments, my child comes with… no excuse!

On a hot day like today. One should be even more careful. To not even for a second. To leave a child alone in a car.

They must change the law & allow a child seat at the front this way you see the child all the time, & take them out with you.

If you see a child unattended in a vehicle, please dial 911/Hatzolah immediately. (Regardless of whether the windows are open, or the engine is running with ac, etc.) Within minutes tragedy can strike C’V. One phone call can save a child’s life, and prevent a lifetime of pain for a family.

To #13- It’s a law to protect children from harm in the event of a collision. The rear seat is the safest place to secure your children.

What are you thinking you want to protect your child. The back seat is the safest place. The story does not say if the parent accidently locked the door or if they just left the kid in the car. If the parent did leave the car with the child in it then they should be chaged with child endangerment no questions asked there is no excuse

Are you insane you can’t leave a car seat in the front seat because of safety if you are in an accident an the air bag hits your child with full force your child probably will not survive. Stop making excuses and take proper care of your children whether you are hispanic, jewish, white, or black.

Leaving a child in the car is a really scary thought but very preventable. Women, leave your purse on the floor near your youngest child, (how many times do you forget your purse?). And there is never an excuse to leave your children in the car alone for even a minute! I had an opportunity to do so last week when I went to the grocery store and was going to another place after. I stopped at my house, took out both kids (yes, I know I have it easier then most family in Lakewood since I ONLY have 2 kids!) and it took a lot longer then turning off the car and running into my basement apartment alone and throwing the groceries into the freezer. I just thought about how precious my children are, a lot more precious then my time! Parents: be responsible.
