Child Gets On Wrong Bus; Sits Through 2 Routes Before Being Brought Back To School

A young child sat through two school bus carpool routes before being noticed and brought back to school today, officials tell TLS. The parents of the five year old boy began worrying about two hours after the boy was scheduled to arrive home, and phoned police and Hatzolah.

An official tells TLS the boy during dismissal reportedly got onto the wrong bus – belonging to a different company as well, and sat through the drop-off route. The bus driver then reportedly picked up another group of children from another school, apparently not realizing the child was still on the bus.

With police intervention and when the Board of Transportation offices finally made contact with the bus carrying the child, the child was located and brought back to the school, the official says.

Hatzolah then picked up the child from school, and brought him back home.

  1. It’s the first day of school, things are about to happen, I am sure tomorrow he will be on the right bus and someone else’s child will end up on a wrong bus.

  2. That is totally unacceptable!! These drivers (especially of primary kids) should have monitors on the bus. There is NO excuse for this. I don’t care if it is the first day or the last. And where was the rebbe for this child??? He should have made sure he got on the right bus.

  3. My child got onto his bus at 3:55, was scheduled to be home at approximately 4:20 and arrived at 5:40! When we saw the bus driving down the road, we knew the answer. The driver was driving at approximately 3 miles per hour. When we asked the driver why she was driving at this extrem speed, she replied that she is not comfortable driving a school bus. My kid was just the seventh to be dropped off. Can you imagine when the last kid was dropped off?!
Regarding the above incident, I agree it is unacceptable. It is not normal what some of these children go through with their transportation issues. It puts a sour ending to their day, which could have been avoided. I am just wondering, why did they need a Hatzalah to transport this child.

  4. #7, this happened to me years ago. Called the school, they said the bus is running late, not to worry. Called again, same story. Finally there was no answer at the school and no child either. I had no cell phone in those days and I was 3 blocks away from home at the bus stop. I had a toddler with me and it was freezing cold in the winter, so a kind neighbor near the bus stop called me in to her house to wait. Finally, finally, one of the school officials drove up in a car with my child at the bus stop. She had gone on the wrong bus. I never called the police because I was assured the bus was just late. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case here.

  5. last year my daughter was the last kid off the bus after that i saw the driver of bus pull over to the shoulder and walk to the back of the bus and then back to the front.

  6. RABOSAI NISHT ALLES KUMP MIR! !EVERYTHING COSTS MONEY AND FOR MONEY YOU CAN GET ANYTHING EXCEPT HEALTH. THEREFORE KEEP IN MIND THAT BUS DRIVERS DO NOT GET PAID ENOUGH BECAUSE THE STATE DOES NOT GIVE ENOUGH MONEY FOR TRANSPORTATION AND MONITORS ALSO COSTS MONEY. WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR THAT?

  7. This is not acceptable. Every bus must be checked after every route. In NY 5 boros a bus driver must check the bus after every run and has a sign posted in the back window stating “This bus has been checked for sleeping children”. This rule came into being after children had been left on buses sleeping and driver had parked the bus after route in parking lot. This procedure saves lives.

  8. Why didnt the driver inspect the bus after the route? Over worked? It was the first day of The school year.

Problem is that the driver did not do his/ her job.

  9. There _is_ a protocol that requires drivers to check for sleeping children after every route. This driver apparently didn’t do that. Shame for the child and his parents that they had to needlessly worry.

  10. Incidentally… Can anyone tell me how to file a complaint if one witnesses an unsafe driving of school bus? I witnessed a blatant violation yesterday and got the license plate and bus co name – so should I call the company directly or call BOE straight?
