A child received severe burns this afternoon after a gas can went up in flames, officials tell TLS.

Officials say it’s unclear how the gas can caught fire, setting fire to the approximately 12-year-old’s pants and burning his leg.

The Fire Department was called, but upon arrival the fire was already extinguished.

The child was driven by a parent to the hospital for treatment.

The Fire Marshal’s office and police responded to the scene as well, officials say.
