Barry H. Kohn, M.D., Ph.D., Lawrence, New York, has been named the new medical director of CHEMED (Center for Health Education, Medicine, and Dentistry). As medical director, Dr. Kohn will be overseeing the medical staff, implementing policies, managing the expansion of the dental wing, and helping to create a comprehensive women’s center. CHEMED is planning to open a pharmacy that will provide a discounted drug program to self pay patients.
Before joining CHEMED, Dr. Kohn served as a medical director of Emblem Health Plan, formerly HIP, a one million member health plan, where he led a team focused on improving care to the disadvantaged and minorities, outreaching specifically to improve care for diabetes and asthma.
Dr. Kohn said, “We developed and implemented programs for asthmatic members to reduce hospitalizations and absenteeism at school and the workplace. We also focused on diabetes, improving diabetes control through education about diets, managing glucose control, and general lifestyle modification. Additionally we instituted a wound healing program that was committed to reducing the dreaded complications of diabetes.”
Prior to that position, Dr. Kohn practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology for 14 years in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale, where he also served as Chief of Gastroenterology at Florida Medical Center.

Dr. Kohn said he is looking to make CHEMED a premier site for medical care not just for the disadvantaged but for the advantaged as well. “As the President Obama began talking about Health Care Reform, it became quite clear to me that federally qualified health centers are really a prime focus of where our country is heading. I wanted to be a part of CHEMED because of its talented leadership. The core people are here and CHEMED’s mission, to maintain the wellness of and improve the healthcare for the community, is aligned with my personal objectives.”
He has a PhD. And an MD.!!! Props to him!!! I can’t think of anyone who would be more qualified than Dr. Kohn.
