VIDEO: The following reader-submitted video shows a driver on Monday blatantly disregarding a school bus’s flashing lights and stop signs while making a turn from Princeton Avenue.
This video and other similar dashcam videos are posted on TLS as an awareness to drivers to use more caution on the roads, and perhaps prevent serious accidents by exercising more courteous driving habits and by properly obeying traffic laws.

It’s hard to tell from the video, but it looked to me like the bus had its yellow lights flashing. If that’s the case, then the driver was allowed to cautiously pass the bus. However, if indeed the red lights were flashing, then the driver should not have passed the bus and would have been given a ticket if an officer had witnessed the offence.
Blatantly? Maybe the driver just didn’t see it or was permitted to turn, because bus driver was waving through.
@ #1, You are to NEVER pass a bus with its yellow or red lights flashing, I don’t know why you or anyone else thinks it’s ok to do so, it is very dangerous.
You can see this everyday if you keep your eyes open.
#4 IF YOU SEE THIS EVERYDAY YOU SHOULD REPORT IT TO THE POLICE. THIS IS PURE RETZICHA!!!
texting?
I don’t think he could see this making aright turn… before he made the turn not really in his sights…
if you look carefully, first the 2 inner lights, the yellow ones, were flashing, but when the bus stopped it changed to the outer lights-the red lights
What happened to the bill they were trying to pass that would put cameras on the buses to catch these guys
A school bus is not allowed by law to make a right on red either, but they do . The bus drivers that transport children on my street don’t even make a full stop at the StopSigns. They just roll right through the stop signs. The companies that hire these drivers are just as culpable as the drivers for not making sure their employees adhere to the laws.
I see that every single day
I see this and much, much worse on a daily basis. Unless a police officer is nearby to witness it, there’s not much you can do (unless you have it on video)
Kerry read the law before you comment http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Inspections/schoolbus/noflash/driving_near.htm
Moderator- HOW COME U NEVER POST MY COMMENTS
In the link attached above, it states that in fromt of a school, a car may pass a stopped bus (at no more than 10mph.) This video was taken of a bus stopped in front of a school.
“Do not pass a bus in either direction when its stop arm is extended. However, if the bus has stopped in front of a school, you may then pass it from either direction at no more than 10 mph.”
@ #11, I read the law, I am a bus driver and I know what to do AND not do, thank you very much
thank you thank yo thank you Kerry for taking care of the children no matter what color they are.
Please plase please don’t turn right on red with the bus because that is against the law.
of course if you’re driving your own car that is fine.
I think the bus was letting the kids off at a school and none of them were going to cross the street. In that case I think it is ok to pass the bus cautiously on the other side of the street.
I watched the video again. The bus was definitely only flashing yellow lights and the driver who passed did nothing wrong.
Why dont we let the officers do there job. And stop worrying about other drivers. Because were all not perfect!
In case anybody was wondering!
State law-you can pass a bus with flashing red lights at no more than 10mph when the bus is on the same side of the school.
You may pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights at a speed not more than 10 mph when you’re traveling on the opposite side of a divided highway.
The above quote is from nj state safety website.
Looks like the driver did nothing wrong.
@ #18, your welcome and no need to worry, I follow company policies and obey ALL traffic laws.
why didnt the bus pull over to the curb? that was a school where those 2 or 3 kids got off? must be small bus run.
of course it was in front of a school. with over 100 schools, there is a school every 20 feet.
This is from the link posted above
Flashing red lights
If you are approaching a school bus from either direction with flashing red lights, you must stop at least 25 feet away from the bus. If you are driving on the opposite side of the road with a median in the middle, you must then slow down to 10 mph.
The law is that you MUST stop, it is dangerous to our children if you don’t!
It is against the law to pass a stopped school bus with flashing lights.
