VIDEO: Our ‘Caught On Camera’ man sent us another one today. This video, shot by a dash-cam, shows drivers completely ignoring the flashing red lights at the train tracks on Cross Street and Prospect.
The ‘Caught on Camera’ man submitted the following statement along with the video. “This was on Cross Street and Prospect, showing many drivers blatantly ignoring the railroad signs seconds before the train passes. People should be aware that it is illegal to cross the train tracks when the lights are flashing, even if they “think” they can make it across in time. It is no different than running a regular red light and puts their lives and the lives of everyone around them in grave danger”.
This video and other similar ‘Caught on Camera’ videos are posted on TLS for all to see as an awareness to use more caution on the roads, and perhaps prevent serious accidents by excersizing more courteous driving habits. Video credits: hobblitt20
we wait for no one, sad but true
Sometimes the lights trip for no reason and there is no train coming.
Link is not working. Why do I need to subscribe to view it?
To # 3. It should be working now. Sorry for the inconvenience.
chavi why dont u look at the WHOLE clip?? there is a train and the clip shows it
Stop and look if a train is visible in the distance and then go.
Always in a rush to go no place fast.
Even after the you think the train is done crossing through you must be careful. According to the law you have to wiait untill the red lights stop flashing inorder to go. Same goes for school buses by the way.
Years ago, five people were killed at that same crossing when they failed to stop. Other family members were following them in another vehicle and witness the tragedy.
Welcome to lakewood where a stop sign is just a suggestion.
TO number 5: sorry I have jnet so I could not view the video. TO TLS Editor: How about frum tube for all of us with filters.
It happens to be that a RR crossing blinking light means a STOP sign – NOT a red light.
In other words: Stop, if clear – go.
thank you #12 for clarifying the law for people eager to condemn with no time to first educate themselves. it is quite shameful!
A motorist must stop at least 15 feet from railroad crossings when there are
flashing lights, ringing bells or flag signals. Descending gates or gates that have
already been lowered indicate that a train is coming and a motorist must stop. A
motorist should never attempt to cross until the gates have been raised and the
lights have stopped flashing (N.J.S.A. 39:4-127.1).
Wow. A zie chuztpa! I never would have believed it if not for this clip. The generations are getting worse. People take a lot of risks these days.
To 12 & 13:
Please REeducate yourselves of the driving laws in the state of New Jersey. (Do this BEFORE getting behind the wheel of a car.)
Railroad flashing light laws are NOT the same as flashing lights at intersections.
“N.J.S.A. 39:4-119 – Failure to stop at a flashing red signal.
N.J.S.A. 39:4-127.1 – Improper crossing of a railroad grade crossing.”
the law says you must stop for the flashing lights and wait till they go off. There is more than one reason for this. We all know the mindset behind why people were crossing the tracks. They say to themselves that the train really isnt moving very fast and that they can make it. Lets say for a minute that they can. What would happen if the car stalled or got stuck on the tracks? Its happened many many times before and people have been killed that way. Most of those cars in the video crossed the tracks within 20 seconds, some within 5 seconds of the train crossing. Is 20 seconds enough time for you to unbuckle your seatbelt, open the back door and get any children that may be in the car out of the car? How about 5 seconds? is that even enough time for yourself? Think about it the next time you think about crossing the tracks when the lights are flashing.
I drive many places and people do this all the time. Don’t think it’s just Lakewood.
Traffic and safety should enlarge the license plates then send the registered owners the proper tickets, so maybe people will think twice about committing these types of violations.
I shudder to think you are driving with your lack of knowledge about driving rules. A railroad crossing is NOT a stop sign. YOU MUST STOP until the lights go off. What you are referring to is a flashing red light at an intersection, such as on forest and 14th. THAT can be treated as a stop sign. Stop, if clear, then go. A flashing red light at a railroad crossing means STOP AND WAIT UNTIL TRAIN PASSES AND LIGHTS ARE OFF.
It terrifies me to think someone like you is allowed to drive a car with your interpretation of the law.
The last car is mamish nuts!! 5 seconds!! He didnt even stop to look he just went. I do think the guy with the dash cam needs to get a life as well.
I think the guy with the dash cam might be saving a life
#19, how about the next time we catch you doing a traffic violation, we make sure to call the cops so they can send YOU a ticket.
#21, thank you. My thoughts exactly about the guy who taped this.
T.G. your just a sore looser ………send me a ticket if I deserve , I am a man and will pay it,,,,,,,,,,,,,
