Carl Fink: I Would Like To Publicly Ask Ms. Irene Miccio To Pull Out Of The Race For The BOE Elections

The following is an article submitted to TLS by Board Of Education member Carl Fink. As a resident of Lakewood I need to voice my opinion regarding the following articles that appeared in the APP and The Lakewood Scoop. At this point, I am sure all of Lakewood would agree that Ms. Miccio has done an outstanding job in the past but it’s time for her to withdraw from the next election. Lakewood needs board members who understand the needs of the children rather then having an attorney explain to her what she is voting for or even suggesting how to vote.

By the attorney’s own admission, “During a phone interview after the Monday morning meeting, Inzelbuch said he was explaining the issue to Miccio because “she is an older lady.”

In light of the recent back and forth on the BOE over the November elections, I would like to publicly ask Ms. Irene Miccio to pull out of the race for the BOE elections should they actually be held in April. As Mr. Inzelbuch clearly stated in an article in the APP, Ms. Miccio is an “older woman” who needs to be explained what she is voting on. For those who attend Board meetings, he has stated the obvious. Many times, Ms. Miccio appears confused and says she has no idea what the vote is about. Other times, an elaborate and slanted explanation from Mr. Inzelbuch usually gives her enough frame of mind to vote the way Mr. Inzelbuch prefers. A candidate who simply does not follow the meetings but rather blindly follows the attorney, should step down. When people vote for a candidate they assume that person will vote based on what they perceive to be right. Ms. Miccio, in her own words, and in the words of the attorney, does not have that ability.

  1. She has paid her dues and i do think she should step aside and enjoy her life. She has been persuaived by others in the past. I totally agree with Mr. Fink no offense to Mrs. Miccio.

  2. While im not disagreeing with you, to write an article like this is a clear disrespect to a lady that has given up much of her time and has served this community. Your vendetta with the attorney is clear but don’t disgrace Ms. Miccio at the same time.

  3. Ms. Miccio might be an “older lady” but the entire board act like 2 year olds. This board is biggest embarassment to the lakewood itelectual community. Ms. Miccio being and “old lady” elevates the group age ratio to 5 year olds

  4. 1.This is the exact opposite of the torah. We respect our elders. I am not saying i disagree with mr fink but there is a way to do things, this is not the way.
    2. The american way is freedom. freedom to vote, freedom to run for office. dont see why mr fink is telling us who to vote for.
    3. I am a little disturbed that mr fink who holds himself to such high knowledge of whats happening in the boe doesn’t know that for a candidate pull out of the race that deadline passed already. I am assuming he doesnt know this and is therefore saying this but if he does the question then arises why is he bringing this up?? just rebel rising?

  5. I dont understand, who is HE to tell someone to drop out. If he has an issue, he should campaign for other candidates. THIS IS AMERICA!

  6. Being told by outsiders how to vote is not the problem. Following what others dictate, against your conscience IS a big problem. In the email she wrote, that’s what she confessed. Mr Fink is right, and if anything, he put it relatively mildly.

  7. “Rebel rising”? You probably meant “rabble rousing”. Learn how to spell, but more importantly, learn how to think.
It is also the American Way for Mr Fink to be allowed to speak his mind freely. And candidates are absolutely free to pull out after the deadline.

  8. I don’t believe that anyone who petitioned to be a candidate should be told to step down and that goes for all candidates who entered this years election race not just Mrs. Miccio. On that note, the absolute right thing to do by the voters of this town, is to act in a responsible manner and cast a vote for who they personally feel is best suited for the job based on what the candidates platform is and not based on what “OTHER” people or groups are telling them how to vote.

  9. There is no need to hold Ms. Miccio up to this kind of ridicule in public. After the events of the last week, it is doubtful that she can attract sufficient votes to return her to office.

Her shoulders are frail, but the absence of compassion is downright nasty. What about the other BOE members? Were they persuaded to vote one way or another?

Let the poor woman alone. She is 1 of 9 board members. Where are the remaining 8 members? Please let Irene end he days as a member of the BOE with some dignity.

  10. This is a tremendous chutzpah and lack of kavod habriyus. Ms Miccio has been an advocate for the jewish community and its mosdos at large for the last 30 years.

“This is a tremendous chutzpah and lack of kavod habriyus. Ms Miccio has been an advocate for the jewish community and its mosdos at large for the last 30 years.” with no disrespect to Mrs Miccio…You should stop promoting your hidden agenda and let the public decide!!!

  12. Mr. Fink: When meetings get shlepped out for hours & hours, after 1:00 AM, even young people get confused! Especially, if the motion is like a double negative, it’s confussing.

If you don’t want to sit on the same board as MS. Irene Miccio, who has every child’s best interest at heart, the door is open!

  13. Mr Fink states… A board who is for the children, and understands the needs of our children….. With the exception of 1 board member…. Do any of them know the needs and triumphs and daily battles our public school children go through. I venture to say no,,,,,

  14. Ms. Miccio is 81 years old. She has served on the BOE for 30 consecutive years. She has been returned to office 10 times based on the vote of Lakewood residents. During all of these years she has been a friend to the children of Lakewood.

What chutzpah by speaking about her like this. Do you have no shame?

  15. Mr. Fink: Why single Mrs. Miccio out? Is any of the other, much younger, clowns in this circus, any less of a puppet? Do they vote their conscience? At least she admits it.

  16. I agree with Mr Fink. Anyone who does not have the children of Lakewoods best interests at heart and needs the attorney to tell them how to vote should resign. And to Mr Hobday, where is your outrage that the attorney was even quoted as saying she is an elderly woman who needs to have simple instructions laid out to her? Is that not the worst kind of ridicule, to imply that since she is older she needs to have things spelled out for her? Mr Fink, while I hardly agree with him in other matters, is courageously speaking his mind- something he is entitled to do. No one else is upset about the way Mr Inzelbuch referred to Ms Miccio and made her out to be incompetent to the press so why jump on Mr Fink for stating his opinion?

  17. well it very obvious this is a site that does not like to hear opposing sides to an issue , I’m not talking about moderating slanderous, vulger language ,inapprpriate remarks which are valid reasons for not allowing them to be posted ,but just reasonable points of view that the moderator just wishes to suppress . Welcome to censorship here at the scoop

  18. Mr fink you need to apologize. This is way out of line and a tremendous lack of respect for someone who served our community for the past 25 years as a public servant. It just aint right!

  19. great job Mr Fink. Thank you so much for all your hard work and for standing up for us. Thank you for all your work and understand tthat you have many true supporters in the community. Sorry you had to be the one to finally stand up to this clown show….but thanks for being there. We need a few more people on the BOE like you!!!

  20. I CAN’T BEAR THIS LETTER, Mr Fink if you can’t respect the olders how can u respect out children?
Let the voters choose who they want!!!
    I’m shocked

  21. To all, I am not berating Irene Miccio at all. I give her all the credit in the world for following orders from some of the people who wrote comments above. Hopefully she can continue on your behalf.
Follow the comments of the attorney, it’s quite simple to decide what he is saying. I didn’t say these things he dii.

  22. Oh, I forgot one thing. It was the attorney who called Irene Miccio and old lady, read the app- not me. If anyone should apologize it should be him.
All I am doing is stating he facts, maybe some of the comments are from people who some people who actually were trying to tell me how I should be voting. I agree what goes around comes around.

  23. I go to each board meerting and what I hear is we have board members that come and vote as they are told too. It’s so obvious if you sit and listen to there votes. There are atleast 5 members who couldn’t care about the public schools but emergency meetings are called for every other reason then the public school chldren.
Mr. Fink, please keep up the good work and let Lakewood know really what is going on.

  24. To 12 Why, always about the tax payers, and not the children? I’m sure that the budget can be cut so it doesn’t effect education!

  25. All of the members of the board of education are questionable. The side bar conversations, cell phones, speaking behind papers, the decorum of the meeting. The length of the meeting designed to wear the public out. At least hold the meeting in a room that is appropriate like an auditorium. The board sets a poor example to the public. Didn’t anyone ever hear of Roberts Rules of Order?

  26. If everyone made sure of what they were voting on, maybe meetings would not be such a circus or our school systems wouldn’t be in such disaray. The disrespect of an elder (not older) woman should be kept to yourself . There must be good reasons why she has had a 30 year run

  27. There is no reason why an attorney should be present at board meetings. I have been told that Lakewood’s attorney continually writes emails to board members, this should be coming from the superintendents office.
Also, in many districts the attorney does not speak with members of the board during a meeting. Please advise if the attorney speaks to board members during meetings?
I was recently sent an portion of U-tube from a past meeting, it appears the atorney was advising a board member how to vote. Is this correct? Is this the person the attorney quoted about in the Asbury Park Press
