Anticipation is rising over the upcoming public meeting being held by the NJTPA.
The NJTPA is heading a study of the Rt. 9 corridor, and is seeking the input of public to help guide their recommendations.
Officials close to the study express concern that the study organizers seem to not be focusing much on the widening of the road, which many consider to be the only real solution to the congestion problem.
Many residents are looking forward to the chance to talk to the decision-makers involved in the improvements for Route 9 to let them know how much this project matters to them.
“There has been a considerable effort to have a grassroots movement to show public backing for dramatic changes, not just small fixes that do not solve this safety and quality-of-life issue that affect so many,” said on activist involved in the event.
The meeting will take place this Tuesday in the Lakewood Municipal Building, 231 Third Street, from 5 – 8:30 pm.

They have to change the venue. It’s gonna be a mobscene.
There is no doubt that Rt. 9 needs to be widened, but my question is why is The NJTPA involved? For those who do not know, NJTPA means the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The NJTPA runs the Turnpike and Parkway and is funded through tolls. Why are they involved with Rt. 9. Is that not the jurisdiction of DOT?
An alternative to widening Rt 9 May be an overpass that could link sections of Rt 70 or say New Hampshire Ave or maybe even the Park Way to totally bypass the town itself to keep the quality of life to all the people of Lakewood.
How will this be possible without the expenditure of millions and millions of dollars in property purchase? Even with eminent domain, it will cost millions.
Marc ,
NJTPA Stands for North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.
NJTPA is a subdivision of the DOT.
To # Mark Greer : NJTA is the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. This is the NJTPA. The NJTPA is the New Jersey Transportation Planning Authority. It is the federally authorized Metropolitan Planning Organization for the 13-county northern New Jersey region. The 13 regions include Ocean County
Nj turnpike ….haha. I love Lakewood.
Over 30 years ago the township and county discussed the Kennedy Blvd. extension as a bypass for E. County Line Rd. connecting to the parkway. All the property was bought and as of today NO Bypass! Also at one time a study was done of the widening or bypass for Rt 9. Still waiting!
If there would be another north – south road, for example Vine Street from Cedarbridge to Pine, and all the way down to Route 70 (via Vermont Ave), that would also relieve traffic on Route 9.
