Burning Out Your Transmission In The Snow

stuck-in-the-snow-A reader sent in the following to TLS: Please make people aware, that constantly changing gears on your vehcile after getting stuck in the snow or in ice, can ultimately result in your transmission getting burnt out. A mechanic confirmed this to my Chavrusah, whose transmission just burnt out on a 2004 Toyota Camry. Editor’s note: Here’s a quote from a Yahoo question “It’s pretty easy to wreck an automatic, whether on purpose or by accident. If you put it in low or second and rev the engine, the transmission gets very hot and can destroy itself. Same for rocking a car back and forth by shifting between drive and reverse over and over as you would do try to get unstuck from snow or sand”.
