Brick officer gets dragged 50 feet during traffic stop

brick police tlsA Brick police officer was nearly killed during a traffic stop when the driver fled with the officer’s arm stuck in the vehicle.

Police say at about 10:00 pm last night Sgt. Erik Olsen conducted a motor vehicle stop on a beige BMW 740I in the area of Harris Ave just off Burnt Tavern Rd.

Sgt. Olsen identified himself and obtained the drivers credentials from the driver who was identified as John Carter, 34 years old, black, male from Brick NJ. Patrolman Ryan Talty arrived on scene at which point they instructed Carter to exit his vehicle because of two outstanding warrants from the Brick Township Municipal Court. Carter refused to exit the vehicle and locked his driver side door. Sgt. Olsen reached into the open window in an attempt to pull the inside door handle to open the door, at which point Carter put the vehicle in drive and accelerated causing Sgt. Olsen’s arm to become stuck in the window frame. Carter accelerated rapidly and dragged Sgt. Olsen approximately fifty feet before he was able to free himself.

Carter was able to flee the scene toward Prospect Ave and attempts to locate him have been negative to this point.

Sgt. Olsen had an injury to his arm but refused medical treatment.

The following charges were signed against Carter, Resisting Arrest, Aggravated Assault, Obstruction of Justice, Hindering Apprehension, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, Disregard of a Stop Sign and Maintenance of lamps.

Bail was set on these charges in the amount of $75,000 full by Brick Township Municipal Court Judge Joseph Grisanti.

John Carter is currently still wanted and if anyone has information on his whereabouts please contact the Police Department at (732)262-1100.

  1. The jerk didn’t want to go to jail on his existing warrants so now when he’s caught he’s just compounded the jail time he’s going to do.And to the officer; get that arm looked at it could cause you trouble in time. God bless you for trying to keep our streets safe.
