A student from Brick Memorial High School was killed this morning in a tragic crash on Lanes Mill Road in Brick, just down the road from the school, TLS has learned.
According to preliminary information, the student was riding an electric bike when he was struck by a vehicle driven by another young adult, possibly also a Memorial High School student.
Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
This story was withheld for some time to give authorities time to notify family members.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on May 19, 2026, a juvenile was taken into custody and charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash Resulting in Death in connection with a motor vehicle crash that occurred on May 19, 2026, in Brick Township.
On May 19, 2026, at approximately 6:50 a.m., Officers from the Brick Township Police Department responded to the area of Lanes Mill Road and Rhode Island Avenue for a report of a bicyclist having been struck by a motor vehicle. Responding Officers discovered that a vehicle had struck a juvenile bicyclist in the roadway and then fled the scene. The juvenile victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Brick Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, revealed that a 2021 BMW was traveling northbound through the intersection of Lanes Mill Road and Rhode Island Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck the bicyclist, who was traveling westbound on Rhode Island Avenue through a marked crosswalk.
Following the crash, the operator of the BMW failed to stop, render aid, or notify law enforcement.
Continuing investigation revealed that a juvenile was operating the motor vehicle at the time of the crash. That juvenile has been taken into custody and is currently being detained in the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
What a tragedy! May the Almighty bring comfort to his family and friends RIP.
both students were riding at the same time early in the morning? one a scooter and the other a motor vehicle? and this was an accident? was there any prior interaction between the 2 students? what is the driver saying to investigators?
what time was the accident? they were both presumably on the way to school? and the school allows teen students to commute to school in cars and scooters? why don’t they provide busing?
Seniors are allowed to drive to school.
Buses are only provided for students who live more than a mile from the school. Those who live closer are expected to walk, some ride bikes. Students who are old enough to drive often drive themselves to school, regardless of where they live in relation to the school. And yes, both were riding at the same time early in the morning because that’s when school starts. Nothing unusual about any of it, except that the driver of the vehicle was allegedly going *way* over the speed limit when the accident happened.
They do provide busing but a quick google search will inform you that the brick memorial high school is a 5 min walk from Rhode Island avenue. To make such assumptions while family and friends are grieving is so inconsiderate.
Please let the family grieve without making up stories. Public school transportation is different then what you may be used to with your children. My prayers are with this family.

Electric bikes should be prohibited to anyone underage and should require a permit… there are kids in my neighborhood no older than 13years old going 30-40mph plus on those things and mostly without helmets. It’s a recipe for disaster
It was a regular bike. Early reports that it was an e-bike are wrong.

What an awful tragedy!! A child on his way to school.. a parent’s worst nightmare. A life snuffed out at the cusp of adulthood. RIP and many prayers for the family to heal and recover. And the driver- in a flash his life and future forever change from one moment of recklessness.
