The White House budget office has rescinded an order freezing federal grants, one day after a judge temporarily blocked the controversial order.
In a new memo to federal agencies, Matthew JVaeth, acting director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, writes that OMB memorandum M-25-13 “is rescinded.”
However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later said in a tweet that the freeze was not rescinded: “This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze,” she wrote.
“It is simply a recission of the [Office of Management and Budget] memo,” Leavitt added.
She also explained that the reason they rescinded the memo was to “end any confusion created by” the judge’s decision.
“The President’s [executive orders] on federal funding remain in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented,” Leavitt wrote.
The original order, which was issued Tuesday evening, sparked concern across the country, as uncertainty mounted over which programs would be frozen.
The two-page memo directed federal agencies to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance,” specifically citing “D.E.I., woke gender ideology and the Green New Deal.”
Trump administration officials had issued clarifications throughout the day on Tuesday, saying programs that provide direct assistance to Americans would not be affected, such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, student loans and food stamps.
