The woman who was burned to death on a Brooklyn subway train in a horrific attack earlier this month has been identified as a 61-year-old resident of Toms River, police announced today.
The victim, Debrina Kawam of Waterberry Court, was sleeping on the train on December 22 when she was set on fire by an illegal immigrant from Guatemala.
The suspect, Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, was arrested and has been charged with murder. and is being held on Rikers Island without bail.
WOW! What a horrible thing!
I thought of an interesting idea.
We live in Ocean County. Maybe every day we can pray to Hashem and ask him to help us and protect all the people in Ocean County from all kinds of evil things that other people are planning against us.
That is a great idea!
Does it really make a difference that the victim was from close by? She was the unfortunate victim of a depraved, incomprehensibly cruel crime. That is what should jolt us.
Of course it makes a difference. The closer something is to you teh more of a message it is from Hashem. We should definitely think about this tragedy. Condolcensces to the family. The guy who did this should face the death penalty.
we need homeless shelters in lakewood, no need for a poor soul to sleep on the subways
not shelters, but state funding for rental assistance for those in need, let’s face it, safe and respectable government housing vouchers can save someone’s life, someone from around the corner.
Surely, rental assistance will avoid people from sleeping on the subway and can save them from being lit on fire… Seriously?
Who said she had no where to sleep? Maybe she was just tired from all the travel…
I have some other ideas though…
Maybe fire retardant clothing would be an idea.
Or fire extinguishers on the subways.
Or maybe we should ban lighters from subways.
Or maybe sleeping should be against the law.
Or maybe stop, drop and roll should be taught on the subways.
So many ideas how to avoid being lit on fire on the subway while you’re sleeping…
Unfortunately it’s Ein Ledavar Soif.
Why do people think that it’s a good idea to solve a super rare problem in an impractical way???
Or maybe bystanders who do nothing should be prosecuted!
How come there is no Police what so ever in the subways. Only once in a blue moon, you see a Police Officer. I think because they are afraid for their own life. The people who ride the subways will tell you the truth that these monsters are in charge of the whole subway system. These monsters do what they want and there are very few cops on the NYC subway system.
Maybe google “not all crimes on the NYC subway make it to the Press”.
people who have a home to go to don’t spend the night on an empty train car EVEN IF they have flame retardant pj’s and are holding the MTA service extiguisher nearby, but if the government is the one going to sleep and does not confront homelessness head on with vouchers, then people who are unfortunate and down in life will just spend the night where the train stops hoping to get back on a better track the next morning, and this leaves them without safe shelter at night and prey to unsavory villians.
what will it help to pass a law not to go to sleep there? as if that will give them a place where to go instead? please, be real!
To ME, you sound like a loyal progressive liberal. Why are you blaming the victim? What you are saying is just saying it’s ok for what he did because there were no fire extinguisher or something.
