BREAKING UPDATE: Lakewood Board of Education approves outsourcing public school busing; Will sell school buses

As first reported on our news alerts, the Lakewood Board of Education this evening voted to outsource its public school busing.

All of the busing will be outsourced, with the exception of special ed out of district busing – which will be rebid.

The Board went according to the recommendation from Holman, Freina & Allison, which indicated the District would save over $8,000,000.

The school buses currently owned by the District will be sold by bid.

  1. It’s about time that the truth be told. The BOE has wasted so much money when they bought those buses several years ago. Jay’s go for them and expand your fleet and services. Just don’t take advantage of having a monopoly in town . Lot’s of luck! LSTA will save this town millions of dollars.

  2. WOW! I wonder who the lucky company that is going to buy the new buses at used care prices?

This is the same thing we did years ago. Then we had “experts” tell us to sell the buses it would be cheaper to outsource transportation. Then we get another “expert” just recently tell us to buy our own buses it would be cheaper. Now we have another “expert” tell us to sell the new buses.
    “EXPERTS” I doubt it.

  3. Wow guess you missed the part about the LSTA being 3 million in debt but than again it’s more of a non public transportation so that doesn’t matter only when it’s about public transportation do we worry where the money goes

  4. its like deja ‘vu . didn’t we do this years ago . then we were told it would be cheaper to buy busses again. now its cheaper to contract out . This BOE is lost .

  5. It might have been a good idea buying passes. The problem is giving these drivers full benefits. No other surrounding district gives bus drivers benefits. The reason why it will be cheaper Is because all the contracting companies don’t give benefits. When you get benefits you talking about a $75-$100,000 salary for a bus driver.

  6. It’s not the BOE but rather the overpaid state monitor. He overrode the BOE and bought the busses over their objections. They said it would not save money but he didn’t listen because he was an expert. He needed to balance the budget, so he made up baloney savings by buying the busses.

    He should be fired.

  7. Just take some time and look at the contractors driving students around Lakewood. The students are hanging out of the windows and walking around the bus. The buses go thru red lights, don’t stop at stop signs and let students cross busy streets (rt 88 and rt 9). Lakewood transportation has rules that are followed taking extra time that the contractors do not follow. good luck for the students next year.

  8. why don’t you teach your children how to behave on the busses. The bus drivers might have a better ride. some children are very disrespectful as well. many times drivers have to take the bus back to the schools because they don’t want to listen or behave. I am lucky I have a good group of children riding my bus. Just saying .
