In a desperate move to save the troubled Lakewood School District, the District is apparently handing over the bill to the Township.
Sources tell TLS a letter is in the works to be sent tonight to the Township, requesting the Township bail them out – again. The Township had previously helped the District cover transportation costs.
In another twist, the Board of Education will reportedly not vote tonight on the proposed budget – which carries an approximately $15 million deficit – because the Budget is not being recognized by the Board.
As earlier reported, the contracts of over 100 staff members are expected to be terminated tonight.
BREAKING UPDATE: The idea to go to the Township for a bail-out has been scrapped, a Board official told TLS.
The draft letter carried the names of the Board President Barry Iann, Board Superintendent Laura Winters, Pastor Glenn Wilson, Kimberly Shaw of the LEA among others. The letter was drafted following a meeting this morning with Board Attorney Marc Zitomer, and Board VP Ada Gonzales, sources say.
Ray
do not fall for this .
I care about children .
I also know I can not continue o live in Lakewood with more and more taxes .
Let the State do something .
NOT the township .
Fix the formula!
There is no reason that thousands of people should have to raise their taxes and fund the township so that we can bail out 100 teachers.
I’m fact it has been reported in the past here, that many of these teachers are teaching students who don’t even live in Lakewood, but are simply registered here.
Band aids don’t help.
Either fix the formula, or let the 100 teachers lose their job, and yell at Trenton. Nothing else will help.
Don’t bail them out, they are waiting money!!!!!
As a Lakewood taxpayer, no thank you. This is just kicking th can down the road at the local taxpayers expense. It is a bailout of the state for their discriminatory funding formula.
Let the budget cuts happen so when their is massive outrage, the state will have to own up to the problem
I say no. We pay enough taxes. Where is the township money coming from? All of us. This is a state problem and not a township problem unless you want to consider their zoning allowances that affect the BOE.
this is why I moved to Toms River – Lower taxes. And yes Lakewood Public Schools should verify if their students actually reside currently in Lakewood.
Absolutely not!
The guys on township committee have kept their budget flat for THREE years in a row by being fiscally responsible. They shouldn’t be falling into the trap of the failing sickening BOE
It’s not the BOE’s fault. It is the states discriminatory funding formula
This is going to end up happening one way or the other. The township is sitting on 29million in surplus they won’t have a choice. Next time cut taxes so you don’t have 1/3 of your yearly budget in reserve
We should be able to vote if we want to keep the school system open.
