BREAKING: Toms River Acting Police Chief Peter Sundack Named As New Police Chief

Acting Toms River Police Chief Peter Sundack will be named as new Toms River Police Chief, TLS has learned.

Sundack has served as the Acting Chief after Chief Mitch Little retired. This evening, officials confirmed that Sundack will be assuming the position as Chief.

Sundack is a graduate of East Brunswick High School and Rutgers University where he majored in environmental science and received his Masters Degree in Administrative Science.

Prior to his law enforcement career, he was an Environmental Scientist and Hazardous Materials Specialist for Cornell University Medical School and a Safety &  Security Manager for St. Peter’s University Hospital. He has been a certified Emergency Medical Technician for 29 years and was a volunteer first aider.

He began his career with Toms River Police in August of 2000 and graduated from Ocean County Police Academy Class 75. During  his time as a patrol officer, he was assigned as a School Resource Officer for Toms River High School East and Intermediate School East.

In 2012 he was promoted to Sergeant as a patrol supervisor and additionally supervised the School Resource Officer and Bicycle Units. He received several commendations and a life saving award.

Sundack is also a long-time instructor at the Ocean County Police Academy in the areas  of Community Relations, Community Policing and Communications. He is an in-service instructor for Toms River Police Department agency training.

“Our administrative committee recently completed the interview process, and I am proud to announce that the committee has decided to name Lieutenant Peter Sundack our next Chief of Police,” Mayor Dan Rodrick stated. “Chief Sundack has demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and dedication to public service throughout his career. His proactive approach to community policing has not only improved the safety of our neighborhoods but has also built a stronger, more trusting relationship between the police force and the residents of Toms River. His commitment to excellence is evident in the numerous initiatives he has led, which have contributed to the reduction of crime and enhanced the quality of life for all citizens.”

Lieutenant Guy Maire will be promoted to the rank of Captain, second in command.

“Captain Maire as second in command is another step forward for our community,” Rodrick stated. “His innovative strategies, combined with a deep understanding of the challenges and needs of Toms River, make him the ideal candidate to assist Chief Sundack in leading our police force into the future. Under the combined leadership of Chief Sundack and Captain Maire – I am confident that we will see continued improvements in law enforcement practices – fostering a safer and more orderly community for all.”

Mayor Rodrick has also authorized Chief Sundack to move forward with promoting three new lieutenants and three new sergeants. They will also be moving forward with hiring five new police officers to replace the three officers who are being promoted, and the two officers who just retired.
