The suspect in Sunday’s fire bombing attack at Temple Ner Tamid of Bloomfield is now in custody and is being questioned by the FBI, authorities say.
Police said Wednesday afternoon that the suspect, 26 year-old Nicholas Malindretos of Clifton, was seen hurling a Molotov cocktail at the front door of the synagogue at 3:19am Sunday morning before fleeing the scene, is now in custody.
A license plate reading device located nearby recorded a vehicle passing by shortly before and shortly after the incident, authorities said.
Law enforcement officers located the vehicle in Clifton and saw several items consistent with the video of the incident plainly visible inside.
They obtained a search warrant for the vehicle.
Video cameras in the area where the vehicle was parked captured the vehicle parking and a male individual with the same physical characteristics as Malindretos exiting the vehicle and entering a nearby building.
The count of attempted use of fire to damage and destroy a building used in interstate commerce is punishable by a minimum of five years in prison, a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
There were no reports of injury and the device did not explode when it struck the door.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy visited the Synagogue Tuesday evening where he called it “a despicable act.”
“Unfortunately, the amount of antisemitic actions in New Jersey is almost exploding,” Murphy said. “And I wish I could say that it were better elsewhere, that we could learn from it. Unfortunately, we’re not immune to this.”
A $10,000 has been offered earlier in the week for information leading to the suspect’s capture.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
