The US Supreme Court has thrown out the convictions of two top aides to then-Governor Chris Christie caught up in the 2013 Bridgegate scandal, in which lanes on the George Washington Bridge were allegedly closed as political retribution for Ft. Lee’s mayor refusal to endorse Christie for reelection.
Bill Baroni and Bridget Kelly, two top aides to Christie, were found guilty of committing fraud.
In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court tossed the convictions, writing that the aides “could not have violated the federal-program fraud or wire fraud laws” because the scandal didn’t “aim to obtain money or property.”
“The evidence the jury heard no doubt shows wrongdoing—deception, corruption, abuse of power,” wrote Justice Elena Kagan in the Court’s opinion. “But the federal fraud statutes at issue do not criminalize all such conduct.”
Chris Christie hailed the Court’s decision as the end of a “political crusade” by the Obama administration against Baroni and Kelly, and dozens of other Christie administration officials.
“There are no words of apology that would be sufficient to right the wrongs,” Christie said in a statement.
