A Lakewood Middle School student is in custody after allegedly bringing a weapon to school, TLS has learned.
Police swarmed the Middle School about 9:30 AM after they learned of the weapon, a knife, and immediately placed the school on lockdown.
The student was located within minutes, and taken into custody.
Police Chief Greg Meyer praised the quick response of the officers.
”As per protocol, the SRO (School Resource Officer) called for a lockdown and for police response, the Chief told TLS. “Responding officers arrived quickly and sealed off the area and assisted the SRO and security guards.”
Chief Meyer says this officers train for such incidents.
“We routinely train with our officers and school security and it shows when something does happen like this.”
The student, a juvenile, was taken to police headquarters. An officer was seen carrying his backpack that allegedly carried the weapon.
The metal detectors failed to pick up the knife because it was aluminum, which is a non-ferrous metal, an official told TLS.
An investigation is underway.
UPDATE: Police say two box cutters were actually brought.
“During the investigation, we learned that the student brought an additional box cutter to school that has since been located.
The 14-year-old student was taken into custody without incident and no other student or staff member was injured.
“The investigation is ongoing and charges are soon to follow,” police said.
Reports have it that this kid should have had not been in school anyways as his vaccinations were not current.
How about his psychiatric evaluation? Aluminum vs. metal detector = intent. Great job, SRO and LPD! This kid must not walk.

Yeah we do, I go here which was scary since I’m in 6th I could have died since I was in the auditorium.
I have seen many clear backpacks but mostly not.
We need to know, why would he feel he’d need to bring a weapon to school ?
Aperantly or from what I was told at school he was going to fail a class and had depression.
Haven’t seen any backpacks that aren’t clear. Who cares what race he is? Maybe just maybe the kid has a job on the weekend that required the knives, used his back pack to carry work tools.

For everyone wondering the metal detectors , there is some in the school but the security is just not high enough and it’s very easy to sneak stuff in . The kid wanted to stab a kid because that kid was talking to his ex. So if you are not aware don’t be blasting comments out there
Its disappointing to realize that many of you people care about what race the teen is, as if it had something to do with why he had box cutters at school with him. It’s not going to be the first nor the last, these situations have become a norm, and it’s sad.
I used to go to this school, i can say that the school had specifically told my mom that i could bring a normal bookbag and not a clear one but i would have to leave it in my locker or the office, but as well i can say those metal detectors never worked, i used to be able to sneak some stuff that had metal but not weapons like this kid, In fact sometimes kids dont even get checked they just walk right past it.
