Children playing around in the Westgate development this afternoon located what appears to be a real hand grenade, officials say.
Sources say the children located the grenade near a home, but decided to keep their find quiet. However, one of the children notified his father, who in turn phoned LCSW to determine if it was real.
Upon arrival, an LCSW member realized it appeared to be a legitimate grenade, and phoned police.
Police also said it appeared to be a real grenade, and immediately closed off the immediate vicinity.
The bomb squad is being called in to investigate, officials said.
UPDATE 2:00 AM. Sources tell TLS the grenade was real, but had been emptied.

Wow..from the Revolutionary War???? They didnt have grenades back then, did they? Pretty unreal…
Dumb question…..why on earth would you call lcsw before the police?? Lcsw is a safety watch not a make believe police force!! If you see something say something doesnt mean to your neighbor or the guy next to you in shul it means people with real authority who can actually do something about it!! A grenade is NOT A TOY let the proper people deal with it even if it comes out as nothing.
Agreed… Vigilance is imperative at all times. We need to realize that no place is too safe in today’s world and that anything can happen anywhere even here in westgate… Bh this incident had a safe outcome but it very easily could have been disastrous HY…
The children of lakewood need to be more educated on things like this . At least the one child had enough sense to tell his father about it can you imagine what would have happened if the other children decided to play with that grenade it could have led into a disaster . please people of lakewood teach your children of the danger of hand grenades.
That’s a Pineapple grenade. Check for bugs?
umm pat, teaching kids bike safety, not talking to strangers…etc. thats normal. no one, in lkwd or elsewhere, shud have to be teaching their children abt Grenade safety lol! Maybe what u meant was teaching children when it’s important to tell adults abt certain things!
My question is, why do people of Lakewood call LCSW before calling Police? Are they afraid of the police?
What would have happened if one of those kids pulled the pin and watched the really cool reaction? After a little bit there would have been multiple funerals.
I bet someone intentionally hid it in the neighborhood hoping that such a thing would occur.
Bottom line, we need to teach kids that things that look dangerous should be reported to an adult. Not specifically a grenade, but anything that looks dangerous like a gun or sharp tool etc.
There is a really nice book from Artscroll that will set you back around 13 bucks. It teaches little kids about safety.
The book is “Let’s Stay Safe. Here is the link:
“We must teach our kids about the danger of hand grenades…” Really?! What about RPG shells?. No, let’s teach our kids about not touching objects that are not theirs and telling parents when they find something that looks odd or out of place. Let’s also teach parents that the police are the good guys and we shouldn’t play our own games with safety and avoid calling them when there is,a risk of danger. Oh and please let’s not start the hyperbole rumors that we are being targeted again… it was empty afterall, not a very effective method if the intent was nefarious…
live in westgate and went to check it out it was nothing and they blocked off the hole rd its a newly dug foundation for more houses it was probally there the hole time and just got undug
the grenade must have fallen off a tv showing a war movie. 🙂
when are we going to stop calling lcsw when this was clearly a police issue. Furthermore the police know we call lcsw before them it shows we distrust the police that is wrong they are here to protect us when will we figure that out when a hand grenade really goes off next time or when a kid really goes missing and we were busy with lcsw
maybe some of us feel safer calling LCSW. Anything wrong with that?? They can be a liaison bet us and the police.
You shouldn’t need a liaison between you and the police
