BREAKING: Local officials hold Emergency Meeting in effort to save Lakewood school teachers’ jobs; Major push for permanent funding fix underway

An emergency meeting was held in Lakewood between local officials, professionals and citizens, in an attempt to save the jobs of the approximately 140 teachers – which were terminated on Monday evening.

Last night, Senator Singer, Mayor Coles, Superintendent Winters, Monitor Azzara, Township Attorney Secare, Annette Kearny, the Township Manager, BMG’s Moshe Glieberman, Glenn Wilson, Mike Rush, and attorney Michael Inzelbuch met and discussed an idea where a permanent funding fix – via legislation – could be implemented using State – not local – funds.

“Should this work out, this could permanently help the struggling District,” said an official present at the meeting.

For immediate relief, however, a letter directed a the Education Commissioner is in the works, which would arrange for the state to allow the $10 million loan to save the teachers’ jobs until the legislation would come in to effect.

This is a developing story.

  1. The Board president is nothing more than one member of the Board.

(moderated) only the night before were asking the Township to use local tax dollars and surplus to fund the deficit and had no long term plan , soethgn that would only hurt local taxpayers .

As to the Board – they were consulted by Superintendent who was invited by the Monitor and Senator .

Grow up and face the facts !!!

    Let’s focus on getting solutions

  2. Don’t take the loan and kick the can down the road.
Loans are only things that you are capable of paying back.

Fight for the formula fix, and if 100 public school teachers are out of a job for a few months until then, so be it. Maybe that will cause the legislation to be passed faster.

    • Yaakov is spot on. Why is everyone so concerned over these teaching jobs. What about the tens of thousands of struggling parents and families who have born the unfair burden of this for too long as taxpayers. We need to get this DONE in TRENTON!

    • Let the state see the reality of where there formula puts this. Sometimes you need to go all the way. Otherwise we are subsidizing the state’s dreams that Lakewood deserves nothing. – Personally I will enroll tomorrow in public school and send my kids if that’s what we need to do.
