In an early Friday morning video to supporters, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker announced that he planned to pursue the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2020. Booker has served in the US Senate since 2013, and was mayor of Newark from 2006 to 2013.
In his video message, Booker took an obvious swipe at President Trump, saying that he wants Americans to see their leaders on TV and “feel pride, not shame”, and that “together we will channel our common pain into our common purpose. Together, America, we will rise”. Booker and other Democrats often attack President Trump as bringing shame upon the United States on the international stage.
Booker’s campaign is centered around unity and bringing people together, in hopes that an uplifting message will create a stark contrast between himself and President Trump, with voters hopefully choosing an uplifting message rather than Trump, who has an abrasive style of leading.
Senator Booker joins a crowded Democratic field vying to lead the Democratic party in the upcoming presidential election, including rising Democratic stars Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Julian Castro.

n his bid to raise his national profile, Booker will visit Iowa next weekend and then go on to campaign in South Carolina and New Hampshire the following week.
Booker’s chief accomplishment in the Senate was his involvement in the recent passing of a criminal justice reform bill. He has also championed clean energy and combatting climate change. In 2017, he co-sponsored Bernie Sanders’ Medicare-for-All bill.
He has faced criticism from Democrats for his ties to Wall Street, including a $2 million campaign contribution he accepted from the securities and investment industry during his 2014 Senate run. Booker has promised not to accept money from SuperPAC’s and lobbyists in his presidential campaign.
