Wow. A true Gadol,well said.
He is 1000% correct!! And I am as litvish as I can be.
I did not travel to the levaya but I certainly understand those that did and especially chasideshe bachurim (which are quite a lot in the mesivta)
What I don’t understand is why the bostoner is writing this to TLS.
Does he read TLS????
While he is a gadol, the one who makes the decisions in Mesivta is also a gadol, and there is nothing wrong with two opinions among gedolim.
Let the one who runs the Mesivta – explain his position and show what it is based on.
There are different mehalchim among Gedolim and Yeshivas. Some, where very makpid on being mevatel sedorim in the middle of the zman for any reason. I have no doubt, that my Rosh Yeshiva, a Gadol of the previous Generation, would not have allowed bochurim to be mevatel sedorim for a full day in a similar situation.
im glad everyone is so learned to give their haskama on the Bostoner or on the Rosh yeshiva, back off you little aunts and let the Torah giants make their own decisions,
wow this is new day in klal yisroel, when rebbas write in to the Lakewood scoop
I don’t know the boys or their School. But I do know that if the debate is taking place over the internet, then the whole question is moot. If boys are instructed not to go, it definitely came after a lot of deliberation into the benefits as opposed to the drawbacks. Of course it is important to attend the levaya of an Adam Gadol. However if the school is responsible for the welfare of its students, then allowing them to go would require them to accompany them and keep tabs on them. And that would be very difficult in a scenario like this funeral. Frankly, sticking up for the boys who defied their Rabbeim is counter educational.
No one is allowed to tell the boys not to go if halacha says that they should! And that means nobody!
Something is a little suspicious. Besides that the letter is not hand signed in any way… wouldn’t one assume that perhaps this is a letter someone of his stature would send and address to the hanhallah (possibly even privately) rather than to a public opinion forum?
R’ Meir stern told the buchurim ,in Passaic N.J. (I was there) that there is no chiyuv to go to R’ Shneur’s lavaya in New York, the din is only in that city
your not obligated to travel to a different city for a levaya, and the sakana ruchny of boys in Brooklyn with all the billboards and shmutz, gevalt in der velt!! finally a rosh yeshiva that knows whats going on!
To go or not to go is not the question. If someone has a compelling reason to want to go, that’s his right. BUT HE NEEDS TO ASK PERMISSION to leave Yeshiva. That is the educational question here, not levaya or not, not Chasidish vs. Litvish. You want to leave? Ask. You want to sneak? Bear the repercussions.
