U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement on the passage of the GOP’s tax plan late last night:
“When the story of this tax plan is written, congressional Republicans will be remembered for never wavering in their determination to give a massive tax cut to corporations, to the wealthiest among us, and to the well-connected at the expense of ordinary Americans, who were nothing but an afterthought. New Jersey families and communities will be among the hardest hit, with potentially long-lasting effects on services, property value, education, and public safety.
“This is not what we were sent to the U.S. Senate to do. We’re supposed to be making life better for everyday Americans—to help make their paychecks bigger and their out-of-pocket costs smaller. Together, we could have achieved these noble aims through a bipartisan bill that delivered game-changing tax cuts for working Americans while making our businesses more competitive abroad. But we didn’t – Republicans refused to work together in any meaningful way.
“And so now we’re left with a tax plan that makes huge corporate tax cuts permanent, lavishes the most benefit on those who already have so much, makes meager middle class tax cuts temporary while raising taxes for many families, and blows a gaping $1.5 trillion hole in the deficit – a hole that our kids and grandkids will be responsible for filling.
“Republican assertions that giant corporations newly flush with cash will, out of the goodness of their hearts, pass on their windfall to workers ignore both evidence and logic. It’s foolhardy at best and deceitful at worst.
“This bill will exacerbate inequality, not ameliorate it. It’s irresponsible, reckless, unjust, and just plain cruel – and for these reasons and more, today is one of my most disappointing days as a U.S. Senator. I look forward to the day—and it will come – that we reverse this devastating piece of legislation and bring real tax reform that truly helps working families and small businesses across the country.”
More disappointing than the day you voted for the Iran deal?
The tax reform bill will benefit most middle working class people, even in NJ. Cory Booker refused to look at the facts and make a decision based on the interest of those he represents and instead played politics with Senator Schumer all in the name of “opposing” the president’s agenda.
Disappointing indeed.
Well, Obamacare was/is worse.
Right. I’m sure you’ll make it up with some other snooker. Good luck.
my question about this new bill is how does it effect me and my family?
If you are married, own a home, and have kids, your taxes will go up.
We are going to see a change in American values as more and more Americans do not buy into the American way (marriage, house and family). That is who the Republicans are catering to.
I am not sure if I understand all that I am reading, but it looks like the new jersesians will be suffering greatly for they pay one of the highest taxes and now their returns/deductables will be capped/limited and the fact that we can’t claim property taxes. Instead of complaining that it doesn’t work well for our state, why don’t they fix our state taxes so they are not that high to begin with?!?
i agree. dont blame the federal goverment for the state goverment’s issues. if Booker cared so much about his constituents he wouldnt have let iran have nuclear weapons
@Deverah:
I agree with you 100%. If he’s complaining abut higher taxes, he should focus on his state first.
Piling on…but yes, I strongly agree with you. We can’t expect the country to fix a problem in NJ, that we can’t seem to fix ourselves.
If Mr Booker really cared about the working people struggling to make ends meet then why did he vote for a $.23 per gallon gas tax. The tax is a major burden for working people.
Maybe now that we cannot deduct our State taxes it will mean that our State Law Makes will have to watch the new taxes they impose on us or we will and I hope vote them OUT of office.
Did he actually read the bill? Per the study done by the NY Times (not exactly a conservative paper), the majority of American middle class will receive a tax cut. (That the cuts expire in a decade is a gimmick – Alternative Minimum Tax income levels also had to be renewed every year until a few years ago).
Typical Liberal Garbage – do they really care about people who work for a living?
MAGA
Morons Are Governing America
teacher thank you. that is disappointing…
I am married, have kids but don’t own a house so this is wonderful for me. I only care about myself so yay!
Teacher, you are so right! This is not the republican party of president Reagen, this is the party of President Trump, & his values.
Teacher. I hope when you teach your students you are more accurate. You’re dont know what you’re talking about.
Unfortunately Booker is a typical liberal who want to misile the public.
Did you know in this bill I will now be able to chose my health care. Obama care will fall apart and I will be able to afford Health Care again.
Why don’t you fix our state taxes so they are not that high to begin with?
Why do we pay more than most states besides Ca and NY?
Tell the truth.
We will gain nothing from the “doubling of the standard deduction” because they pulled the personal exemption that we used to get for each person in the household.
The only ones that will gain will be singles, couples, and couples with 1 child.Couples with 2 children will stay about the same and couples with 3+ children will lose out on this.
I will never vote for Bokker and he doesn’t care about us. Threw Israel to the wolves of Iran.
yes—-personally one of the “disappointing days in my life” was when he was elected
Can someone point me to an accurate tax calculator? Because every calculator I’ve tried shows that I’ll save approx $2000 over 2017 taxes – yet all the comments above indicate that my taxes will go up. I’m married with a sizable family, own a modest home, and my husband and I both work.
Thank you president Trump for thinking about the working people. No one put up such a fuss when Obama spent trillions bailing out the big companies. At least Trump is trying to put money in our hands to help the economy. There’s a big misconception in this country about who is rich. Most of us “rich” people are actually not making it since the government is taking alot from us to give lots of benefits to the poor. So while I hope this bill helps the poor I’m glad I will also finally get some relief.
The teacher’s comment is ignorant and not true. Its what the media does just to sway people against Trump.
I especially love the Democrats’ claim that health insurance premiums will rise as much as 10% with the elimination of the mandate. As if they haven’t increased as much as 25% since the enactment of Obamacare…
I will also save around $2K. Middle class family of 4. I rent an apartment.
Most of us who own a house will be able to deduct our real estate taxes it’s just capped…senator Booker is terrible he has done nothing to help us in new jersey.
I do hope our new democratic governor and legislature cut our taxes and let us keep our money!!
Where was Mr. Booker when Obama doubled our deficit. Our kids and Grandkids will be affected by that not this tax cut.
Right now I don’t think to many people know the actual truth of this bill…we will all know in the next few months.. if our taxes go up then the Republicans will be given the boot! If the taxes go down then more democrats will be given the boot.. time will tell
Fact is that most middle-class families WILL save money. The only ones that will lose are single filers and upper middle-class families that happen to fall into a particular unique scenario. But overall all will gain. Booker, now you can work on influencing the state legislature to lower our taxes…
The scoop posted this calculator. According to it, families with a home and many kids will save.

Based on a simple reading of these rules, at least 90% of taxpayers should experience at least some tax benefit from these new laws, with larger families in the middle-income range experiencing the greatest benefits.
Thats me,so why is Booker saying its bad?????
Today is one of the most disappointing days you are my senator!
Put us both out of this misery by resigning immediately!
Why don’t we wait and comment April 2019 when we actually see the results because it seems not as clear cut who’s going to save and who’s going to pay more
