“As I understand it, the bus routes which currently remain uncovered are for non-public schools,” the Board of Education President Barry Iann told TLS today.
As earlier reported, approximately 875 students will not have busing tomorrow – down from approximately 2,000 – as result of the cancelled Durham routes.
Iann says this entire fiasco could have been avoided had it not been for the State.
“I think this entire situation could have been avoided if the State had not cancelled the bus contracts mid-year,” Iann told TLS. “It was presumptuous for us to assume that once we cancelled the routes that all the bus companies who did business with the Board would agree to fulfill the contracts after we rescinded the contract cancellations.”
These routes were put out for quote on Friday, “and we are hoping that they will be picked up by another bus contractor at a competitive price.”
Iann thanked the bus companies that stuck it out.
“We are all very grateful to those bus companies that did agree to continue transporting the children of Lakewood.”
