Bill Would Require Medical Facilities To Use Bills That Patients Can Understand

Can’t read your medical bill? You’re not the only one. Medical bills issued in New Jersey would be uniform and easy-to-read under legislation introduced by Assemblywoman Donna Simon. “This legislation will crack the secretive code of medical bills,” Simon, R-Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer and Middlesex, said. “This will eliminate the frustration of getting a bill that doesn’t clearly explain all of the charges.”

The bill would require standardized medical bills to patients that are itemized and clearly denote the cost and purpose of each item. The Commissioner of Health and Senior Services would designate a standard form for health care facilities. The State Board of Medical Examiners, in coordination with the Commissioner, would designate a similar form for physicians.

“Medical bills must be clear, easy-to-read and patient-friendly,” Simon said. “People receiving healthcare are entitled to know what they had done, how much it costs and how much they may owe.” TLS.
