Bill Banning Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers in New Jersey Approved by Committee

The Senate Environment and Energy Committee approved legislation sponsored by Senator Bob Smith which would prohibit the sale and use of most gas-powered leaf blowers.

According to the bill, a “gas-powered leaf blower” has a two-stroke or four-stroke engine and uses gasoline or a gasoline and oil blend as fuel.

“Gas-powered leaf blowers have for years been a scourge on the local environment. Not only are they massive polluters, but they are also a nuisance to people trying to enjoy the outdoors,” said Senator Smith (D-Middlesex/Somerset). “There are an abundance of cheap electric alternatives, which are quieter, safer to operate, and less harmful for the environment.”

Gas-powered leaf blowers emit high rates of pollutants. The amount of carbon monoxide emitted from a typical backpack gas-powered leaf blower for just one hour is equal to the amount of carbon monoxide emitted from the tailpipe of an automobile operating for over eight hours, and, for the other pollutants, the amounts are even greater.

According to the sponsor, gas-powered leaf blowers are also associated with occupational health concerns, generating noise at a decibel level capable of causing hearing loss in a short amount of time, and send dust and other small particles into the air for considerable distances.

Under the bill, the sale or distribution of gas-powered leaf blowers with a two-stroke engine would be prohibited two years after the bill’s effective date, while their use would be prohibited four years after its effective date. The use of gas-powered leaf blowers with a four-stroke engine would be prohibited four years after the bill’s effective date, with certain exceptions for municipal use and during peak seasons.

Any person who violates the bill’s provisions would be subject to a civil penalty of not less than $500 nor more than $1,000 for each offense.

The bill was advanced in a 3-2 vote.

  1. Nebach!
These liberals banning leaf blowers and legalizing marijuana.
What’s the plan again? To make people Live longer? What health issues are there due to leaf blowers???

  2. It’s also a pity on the poor laborers whom use them as they’re bad for their health and hearing .
I have a 20volt battery kit of which the battery runs for 1.5 hours in the hedge trimmer, 2.5 hours in the drill and only 20 minutes in the blower. The cordless blowers drain the batteries very quickly of which the landscapers will need to have many batteries and chargers on hand but they are much quieter and better for your health .

  3. thats amazing as they allow huge office building to go up, with a total glass exterior. Do you have any idea what it takes to cool one of those green houses? gas blowers are needed, glass walls is all about asthetics, and the sun come burning right through, they need ac units pumping around the clock the fight the sun. What a waist of resources and a strain on the grid

  4. I’m most scared that they’ll ban portable generators. Those are essential for blackouts. If they ban them in California, they can ban them here.

  5. Keep up the stupidity and kill all the people just to save the planet.

How about use the planet and save the people! If the liberal demorats have their way WEED go back to horse and buggy, and outhouses …

  6. R Joe Wagner,
The concern is not anything ligit that makes sence there is no Health problems that are caused by leaf blowers people die quicker from eating glatt bite than standing next to a leaf blower.

  7. Another fascitic ban from the fascistic Democrats in Trenton. Keep voting for the Democrats as they make our lives harder and more expensive.

  8. when i first saw the picture i mistook it that the bill would ban the leaf vacuum truck! Could never happen though, its from the Public Works’ most cherished trucks from their random fleet of vehicles!
Regarding the leaf blowers, granted that the electric ones are quieter, but they simply can’t get the leaves removed the way a good old gas powered one can! The same people try making our showers to have no pressure, which causes us to just take a longer shower, so u dont conserve energy at the end of the day!

  9. So they ban my gas powered leaf blower. I will simply buy the largest electric powered blower and plug it into a gas powered generator I have on my truck. Problem solved.

  10. They can make any law they want… Will WE THE PEOPLE adhere to such nonsense is a whole different thing all together. WE SAY NO TO YOUR STUPID LAW !!! Watch me blowing my leaf blower in your face and let’s see if you can stop it. Government forgot one thing we tell you what’s what.
