Bikur Cholim of Lakewood has one overriding goal: to help wherever help is needed. Within a short time, the organization was providing free transportation to out-of-town medical appointments, kosher meals and food pantries in area hospitals, and a selection of medical equipment available for loan.

Bikur Cholim of Lakewood now services most of the NJ area hospitals. It sees to the physical and spiritual well-being of patients and their families with food pantries that are restocked daily, as well as comfortable Shabbos accommodations for patients’ families directly across the street from Kimball Hospital. Another essential service is patient advocacy, which helps families navigate the hospital system and ensures that patients receive the most appropriate and best quality care available.

Though the Lakewood community has grown exponentially, the volunteers and staff of Bikur Cholim of Lakewood maintain the organization’s original objective: helping in any way, and every way, they can.

The following is a letter submitted yesterday to Bikur Cholim:

On September 10th of last year, our lives changed forever. Our son Max, while a student in New York City at Yeshiva University, was diagnosed with leukemia. Fifteen minutes after the phone call I was in a car driving to New York to spend the next six months with my child. Here we were, his mother and I, hundreds of miles from our home in Indiana, no family, no place to stay, off work and overwhelmed with the new emotional, physical and financial burden of a child with cancer. It was overwhelming.

Within hours however, volunteers from Bikur Cholim were by our side. They provided us lodging at the Manhattan Friendship House no more than a block away from the hospital. They drowned us with food, spiritual guidance, and any and all the support we needed.

During those six months, they opened our eyes to the true meaning of Judaism. We are a people who love and care for each other, irrespective of our degree of observance to Jewish laws. Bikur Cholim embodies this spirit of caring and has helped us to understand that being even a little observant can comfort and soothe our souls during this trying time.

Now I could lie and tell you my wife and I have become highly observant, keep strict kosher, don’t drive on Shabbos or turn on the lights but that is just not true. But I am light years from where I was and I am grateful to Bikur Cholim for this. We are better parents, better people for having them in our lives.

I am studying torah on a daily basis, something I would never have envisioned in my life. We light the Shabbat candles, we make challahs, we watch what we eat and we pray more. I try to go to minion and don tefillin. I catch myself kissing the mazzuzah as I walk out the door, skipping the cheeseburger, opting out of the shrimp, turning off the TV and treating others in the spirit of Bikur Cholim. I know that might not sound like much, but for us it’s a huge step and the seeds of Bikur Cholim continue to grow in our family

For six months we stayed at the Manhattan Friendship house so that we could be with our child. I am not sure how my family would have survived without the support we received.

We never ever envisioned having to use the services of this wonderful organization, and hope we never will again, but knowing they are there is a calming wind in a storm of uncertainty for our family.

Our gratitude will endure for the rest of our lives
