Hatzolah and Bikur Cholim will be holding its 6th annual Community Health Screening event for men this Sunday. The annual event, says Hatzolah, has already saved many lives as a result.
Last year’s event attracted hundreds of men, many whom have discovered a medical condition they were previously unaware of, Hatzolah tells TLS.
The screening includes testing for Cholesterol, Glucose, Blood Pressure, Oxygen Saturation and Body Mass Index.
This year’s screening, will take place at the Esther Gerber Auditorium (5th & Madison), between the hours of 1PM-6PM.
There is a suggested $5 donation to help cover some of the expenses. TLS.
Last year they had a health screening for men only and this year also. Any reason why there isn’t one for women?
Thanks Bikur Cholim and Hatzolah for your great work!
This is a very important matter thanks for addressing the issue.
Everyone shoud be there !

they arent
however the women dont want the men to do it and thier arent enough women/girls that can do it !
you have any suggestions ?
For the information of all those interested parties asking why it is not done for women:
Heart disease is prevalent amongst the male population, especially the younger male population from 25 to 55, and is therefore a greater concern when dealing with the typical crowd in lakewood; this is a chance to bring awareness to those who would not consider themselves to be at risk who may very well be on the cusp of a cardiac event. Women, especially younger women, are not nearly as common to experience a coronary event at such a young age unless they have some prior family history, in which case they are probably being followed by a primary care physician or cardiologist. Being that the purpose is to make people aware of the dangers that lurk behind the rolls of adipose tissue and sedentary lifestyles, it is the group which is at greater risk that is brought to the forefront, and encouraged to attend.
Therefore, it is men who are urged to attend, whilst women, though some may be at risk statistically speaking, are not, if you will, “afforded” the health drive on this scale, due to the overall redundancy of women being in better cardiac and cholesterol health due to the horomonal and metabolic factors that can be addressed in your local library.
If they are indeed looking for a women/girls who r nurses to help out i would offer my time…many females can be equally at risk and do deserve the same interventions
The logic is that most woman in lakewood visit a physician regularly and also get bloodwork as opposed to many young men who never have a reason go to a Doctor.
I am a woman and I never go to a doctor.

Why doesn’t that Frum RN group do it for women – the one that has get togethers twice a year?

You can be tested (for money) in your own home.
Wow medicalknow, that is one of the most uninformed statements I have ever heard on this topic. You need to get with the times, perhaps a few decades ago that was the opinion of some in the medical community but MANY studies and statistics have proven that women are equally as prone to heart disease as men. In fact heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Almost two-thirds (64%) of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms. (American Heart Assoc.) In the past there have been a lower number of reported cases in women due to several factors; women tend to exhibit pain with heart disease in other parts of the body besides the chest (lower jaw, abdomen, back) which are not seemingly related to the heart, there is also a tendency for heart attacks to appear later in life in women than in men, and until recently there have been more heart disease studies conducted on men than women.
Nowadays women need to be more informed than ever on the warning signs and symptoms of heart disease. Some females may exhibit similar symptoms as men, but many women also show different signs of cardiovascular conditions that can be indicators of impending heart disease or heart attacks. Chronic heartburn is often a sign of heart problems, as is a loss of appetite, coughing and heart flutters, and A noticeable lack of energy. In my opinion women should be screened just as often and early as men BECAUSE the warning signs are outside of the typical conditions of obesity, high blood pressure, and cholesterol and the symptoms of chest and arm pain. So next time medicalknow, before you start spouting off your medical reasons for the gender selectivity make sure your information is at least accurate for today’s day and age.
Again I ask is this for the whole community or just for Frum? Community means the town.
LKWD.
My purpose here is not to answer whether or not there is gender selectivity, which, from my experience with jews, is more pronounced by uninformed people such as yourself than the masses accused of being (moderated). I do however feel that you took the time to write an extensive comment and it is in this way that I will at the very least address some of the issues you are harboring
#1 Taking statistics off the AHA website is a far cry from peer reviewed journals.
#2 If I was to sit here to lecture the public on risk factors surrounding the typical case of CAD, we would once gain be stuck with the fact that at age 40 Lifetime risk of CAD is 49% in men and 32% in women.
#3 The cause of rising risk of CAD amongst women is primarily due to obesity, tobacco usage, and hormone replacement.
Intro to #4
My favorite…

#4: The purpose of a health screening is to boost awareness to those that are walking around as ticking time bombs. If this were a doctor run festival then your information would be very integral. However this is a screening, a service done to help those that are unaware of some problem and who will sooner dismiss an issue than address it. So people who are sick, go see a doctor. People who don’t know, go to the screening.
Lastly #7: The purpose of comments on a message board is to help people or to address questions that are not fully explained. The purpose is not for overzealous intellectualy challenged fools to follow up comments with their damp and limited knowedge base as well as their need for emotional fulfillment. So, with that said, my information is not only current but is given over in a way that will be understood and appreciated. If someone has an acute problem they visit a doctor. If someone dismisses acute issues as having indigestion or bad habits, as so many men do, then this screening is for them. If you feel that a screening is apropo for women, then set one up. As it stands, the people who address such services with disdain and need to know why there is gender selectivity are not about to set up something to deal with their issue. They will simply state their case and wait to see if anyone else goes along with them. This is no different than screaming fire in a crowded room and watching for reactions. If you have a true issue and feel there needs to be a screening, based on your advanced medical knowledge which i would be willing to temper at your leisure but not on a community board, then by all means call Bikur Cholim and see if this would be attainable. I’m sure based on their reputation in the Jewish communities they would be more than willing to help you make your dream a reality.
Good Luck.
