BIKUR CHOLIM – Always there, for anyone in need. Reaching even further every day. REACH Into Your Pockets!

[COMMUNICATED] It was a little after Purim last year, and 40-year-old S* was not feeling all that well. He heard the sirens in the streets, but he was young, and relatively healthy – there was no reason for him to worry at all.

But soon enough, everything changed.

Over Shabbos, it grew harder and harder for him to breathe. On Motzei Shabbos he became one of the many people who were taken into the hospital, another one of the cacophony of sirens that came to define that night.

For most people across the country, being in the hospital with COVID meant being completely cut off from the outside world. Families without updates, patients not knowing whether they would see a familiar face ever again.

Alone in the hospital. Patients left to fend for themselves, with nobody there to look out for them, to guide them, and to give them a helping hand when they reached out for someone’s help.

Except S was not alone.

As soon as COVID hit, Bikur Cholim realized the potential impact it would have on patient care. Bikur Cholim was prepared, building on longstanding relationships with local hospitals to get access to patients nobody else had. For S – and for his wife – this meant everything. When S needed to be intubated, Bikur Cholim had someone with him in the room, helping calm his fears as he underwent the procedure.

Over the next week, Mrs. S got hourly updates on his condition, hearing when there were complications with his ventilator, and how they were resolved. She heard about the therapies he was undergoing, and how he was responding to them. This continued through when S was extubated, and until he was released from the hospital.

Nobody thinks they will find themselves in that sort of situation, but when they are, Bikur Cholim is there for them.

It is not just COVID. Whatever the need may be, Bikur Cholim will make sure the necessary resource reaches the patient – and family – in need.

  • A family was visiting for Yom Tov when their newborn was not feeling well. Their doctor – who they would be seeing the next day – wanted to have bloodwork done and lab results in hand when they came into his office to see him. A Bikur Cholim Health at Home volunteer nurse went that night to draw the blood, and our advocacy team worked with the laboratory expedite the results.
  • K* calls the Bikur Cholim hotline at 4:15 AM. He was being discharged from the hospital and needed a ride home. By 4:24 AM a volunteer was there, making sure he reached his home quickly and safely.
  • When the R family’s baby was swallowing awkwardly, they reached out to Bikur Cholim’s referral department, for help finding a specialist to deal with this seemingly minor issue. It turned out to be a small symptom of something much bigger, and Bikur Cholim remained at their side throughout. They got the insurance company to cover the requisite treatments and coordinated the hospital transfer – ensuring they would be able to reach the top specialist in the field. When that was done, they helped them with getting set up at home, putting them in touch with local specialists and continuing with bringing food for their family as they transitioned back to life.
  • F fell and broke her legs. She did not want to stay in the hospital – the current climate makes visitation extremely restrictive. She wanted to be with family. Bikur Cholim helped facilitate a safe discharge, a volunteer came with the proper equipment she would need to stay at home and drove her home safely. The team then helped navigate her navigate through the intricacies of proper care, never once being out of reach…

At some point in life, every family turns to Bikur Cholim. We Daven that it should be for Simchos, for things as simple as the stocked pantry in the maternity ward and meals for Kimpeturin families throughout Lakewood.

But when life gets more complicated, Bikur Cholim extends their reach. There is no such thing as “we don’t do that.”

Now, Bikur Cholim needs everyone to partner with us, as we continue expanding to serve the increasing needs of a growing community. We are always there for you when you reach out to us, please be there for us when we reach out to you, and help us reach even more people, and provide a rock of stability for them in a tumultuous time.
