A Lakewood resident is warning others after receiving an alarming phone call that appeared to come from a legitimate JPMorgan Chase number – but turned out to be a scam.
According to the resident, the caller claimed to be from Chase’s fraud department, stating that “someone tried to send a Zelle” from the account and that the name “Jessica” was involved. Sensing something suspicious, the resident asked the caller which account had been compromised.
“He says, ‘your personal,’” the resident recounted. “I asked for the last four digits of the account. He just repeated, ‘your personal checking.’ I told him, yes, but please tell me the last four digits.”
At that point, the scammer abruptly hung up.
Officials and consumer protection advocates continue to warn the public that scammers are increasingly using “spoofing,” a tactic that makes fraudulent calls appear to come from real bank phone numbers. Residents are urged to never provide personal information over the phone unless they initiate the call themselves.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call is advised to hang up immediately and contact their bank directly using the number on the back of their card.

A similar thing happened to me today! I received a call from someone identifying them as Chase. (Later i even called the number that came up on my phone and Chase picked with their regular recording.) The person on the phone asked me if i made a charge for 2900.68 for Guns America.com. The card that was used ended in xxxx. I said i don’t know but i have to check. I then told that person that i don’t think I have a card that ended in that number but I will have to check. She held on and then hung up and then called me back. I told her that i don’t have such a credit number with those digits. We both hung up. I then called Chase through the 800# in the back of my cc. I spoke to the Fraud dept and i told them what happened. She looked up the cc number told to me and she said there is no such card out there.
Chase did tell me that they usually do not call. And even if they do, they will usually send a text or email asking about the suspected purchase. I checked my email and texts and i did not see anything from Chase.
In summary, B”h, i did not give any information. I am very fortunate and thank Hashem that nothing happened
