BEWARE: Lakewood Askonim Warn about Car Rental Scam after Bachur Nearly Lands in Hot Water

Lakewood Askonim today reached out today to TLS to warn about a serious issue which has nearly landed a Bachur with serious issues.

Askonim say there appears to be a person, or people, renting out uninsured and unlicensed vehicles to Bachurim for cheap prices, and while some may know it’s illegal, many unfortunately do not.

Last night, a Bachur driving in Lakewood was pulled over for driving one of these rentals when the officer noticed the vehicle did not have a license plate. The vehicle was impounded, and police are investigating the issue.

“Had this happened on the Parkway or somewhere else where police couldn’t immediately verify the facts surrounding the incident, this boy would have been locked up,” said one of the Askonim dealing with the issue.

The message Askonim have for Bachurim is if something sounds off, stay away from it.

“It might sound good, but using a non-reputable business can land you with hefty fines and legal issues,” he said.

  1. “Just great!” said the exasperated victim of multiple scam attacks. “First they hacked into my computer and stole all my personal info. Then they hacked into my car’s computer system and stole my car. Now they hacked into the car rental systems, and suddenly I’m driving a stolen vehicle – or an illegal one. What’s next, they hack into my cholent pot, and suddenly I’m eating stolen cholent!? Or illegal cholent!?”
“While it’s true that Mayim genuvim is mesukim,” he conceded, “nevertheless, I like my cholent salty, not sweet!
“I’ll eat challah with honey,” he added, “but I can’t help it, my cholent’s gotta be salty, period!”

    • Or a stolen succa or lulav – it’s posul! Now the lomdus – is it because it’s considered chaseir or… (Succa Perek Lulav Hagazul)

  2. Goose Gossage is highly disturbed by these event and encourages all to rent using corporate codes, the worst that can happen is they ban (which has happened to Goose) but Gossage changed his license from NJ to CT and now rents again.

Those dumb people at Hertz will never know!!!

In all seriousness Goose Gossage condemns these kind of dealings

    Gossage out!

  3. Nothing personal on any society, but I heard of a south American immigrant who was driving without a license. He wasn’t arrested by the officer who stopped him, because he’s an immigrant. (He claimed he was in middle of taking the test but had failed the first time…) So we came to the conclusion that if you’re stopped, just say you have no license and that you’re an immigrant!!
(I’m just noting the political aspect. But we have to be happy with what we have. And the baalei mussar say it’s better to be on a level where you do things right, even though it may take some more effort.)
